An Oxford councillor and taxi driver has had five points added to his driving licence and fined £660 after he was caught driving at nearly double the speed limit.

Sajjad Malik, 57, of Mary Price Close, Headington, was caught driving at 53mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford Road, Tiddington, on 14 January, court papers state.

He pleaded guilty to exceeding the 30mph speed limit at a hearing at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Malik, who represents Cowley on Oxford City Council, where he is the leader of the Real Independents, and is an independent member for Temple Cowley on Oxfordshire County Council, was also told to pay a £264 victim surcharge.
