A stretch of the M4 was closed for hours following a significant diesel spillageacross the carriageway, National Highways said.

The motorway was shut westbound between junction 16 and 17 near Chippenham after an HGV collided with the central reservation barrier shortly after 02:00 BST on Thursday.

One lane of the eastbound carriageway was also been shut due to the "final position of the HGV".

National Highways said "extensive repairs" had to be carried out to 300m of central reservation safety barrier and almost 150m of road needed to be resurfaced. All lanes reopened on Thursday night.
