A 36-year-old man has appeared in court charged with rape and murder following the death of a woman in her 80s.

The woman was found dead in a property in the Ashton area, near Helston, Cornwall, at about 00:00 BST on Friday. Her family has been told.

Edward Holden, 36, of Penzance, appeared before Truro Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded into custody to appear before Truro Crown Court on Tuesday.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "We recognise that an incident such as this will cause worry amongst our communities. We would specifically request that any social media commentary is avoided, and we ask for your support as we further our investigations."
