Two people were taken to hospital after a crash on the A27 on Sunday evening

Part of the A27 has re-opened after a serious crash which led two people being taken to hospital, police say.

Emergency services were called to a single-vehicle crash on the eastbound carriageway, near Ashcombe Roundabout in Lewes, shortly after 20:00 BST on Sunday, Sussex Police said.

The force said the female driver of the vehicle suffered serious injuries while the male, sole passenger suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed eastbound between the B2123 (Falmer) and the A277 (Lewes) while specialist contractors treated "a large spillage" on the carriageway, but opened at about 14:00 on Monday, National Highways said.

Traffic was diverted via local routes.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
