Fire crews tackle large blaze at landfill site
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue ServiceFire crews remain at the scene of a large blaze at a landfill site as an investigation is launched to determine its cause.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Pools Road in Wilburton just after 15:00 BST on Wednesday.
It said about 2,000 sq m of refuse was on fire and 30 firefighters from several stations, including Ely, Cottenham, and Littleport, initially arrived at the scene.
Station commander Andy Hill said: "We are expecting to be on scene for the remainder of Thursday and specialist advisors, heavy machinery and equipment have been brought in to bring this incident to a conclusion."
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service"The initial crews worked hard to try and contain the fire but quickly requested more fire engines to assist, not only for water but for the firefighters to try and tackle the fire from multiple places," Hill added.
People were advised to avoid the area, and nearby residents were encouraged to close doors and windows, due to the amount of smoke.
The fire service also advised people to check before they travel due to a road closure in the area.
