New school extension to support 70 SEND pupils

A £11.5m school expansion has created spaces for 70 children with special educational needs or disabilities.

The new complex, at Watermill School in Stoke-on-Trent, has been funded by the city council's Schools Capital Programme.

The local authority said the building would help "meet growing demand across the city" and allow more children to go to school close to home.

The building is due to open on Monday, and over the next few weeks pupils will be enrolled at the new, two-storey learning facility.

The new facility has been constructed on Turnhurst Road, in Packmoor, and will be known as Watermill Brindley.

Finlay Gordon-McCusker, the councillor for growth, regeneration and transport, said: "Not only will this new school extension provide 70 much-needed places for children and young people with SEND, it has also helped to bring life back to a brownfield site which had been vacant for many years."

Watermill School, which became an Academy in 2019, teaches pupils aged between three and 16. All pupils have learning difficulties of some kind.
