A man has been jailed after trying to kill another customer at a betting shop in Leicester.

Police said the victim had been celebrating winning a bet when he was attacked with a knife by Parvinder Singh at the bookmakers in Melton Road on 24 May 2025.

The 35-year-old was detained by staff before officers arrived and in January he was found guilty of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at Leicester Crown Court.

At the same court on Monday, Singh received a 24-year extended sentence including 20 years of imprisonment.

Leicestershire Police said the victim, who needed hospital treatment for cuts to his head and hand, did not know Singh.

Det Con Marie Applewhite said: "This was a completely unprovoked incident that could've had a far more severe outcome.

"Recognition must go to the two members of staff who restrained him.

"They managed to prevent the victim, or anyone else, from suffering serious injuries while putting themselves at risk. What they did that day must be commended."
