Highway bosses on the Isle of Man have apologised after a section of road was mistakenly resurfaced by mistake.

The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) said a "limited section" of the road at Marine Drive had been resurfaced after a "misunderstanding following a request to assess the condition of the route".

The scenic route is popular with dog walkers and those keen to spot marine wildlife off the eastern coast but has been closed between Douglas Head and Port Soderick for almost 50 years.

The department said the work had been "reviewed and scaled back" as soon as the mistake was discovered.

The continuation of the project was limited "solely to ensure the area was left in a safe condition", it said.

Internal processes were now being reviewed, it said, to "ensure clearer communication and oversight going forward".

The cost of the works, which were carried out by a DOI team, has not been revealed.
