Arrest after taxi driven wrong way on dual carriageway

A man has been arrested after a taxi knocked a cyclist off their bike and then drove the wrong way down a dual carriageway.

Officers intervened on the A55 westbound on Anglesey on Monday evening, temporarily closing the road while they stopped the taxi between Rhosneigr and Rhostrehewfa.

North Wales Police said it had received a report of a taxi being stolen from Holyhead at about 19:30 BST.

Shortly after, the taxi had been involved in a collision with a cyclist on London Road, during which several parked vehicles were also damaged, before entering the A55.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A man was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, dangerous driving and failing to provide specimen for analysis. He remained in custody on Tuesday.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Nick Evans said urged anyone with information about or footage of the incident to contact the force.

"It is clear to all of us, particularly in light of the tragic events in Cleveland, just how serious the potential consequences of this incident were," he said.

"I am extremely proud of the courage and professionalism shown by our officers in resolving a highly challenging situation safely.

"I would encourage people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident or any possible motivations while our investigation remains ongoing."

In a social media post, the owner of the taxi company, Tacsi Zoe, said: "I want to make it absolutely clear that this was not myself or any of my drivers. I was personally caught up in this and, like many others, found the whole situation extremely scary and traumatic.

"A huge thank you to all the police officers involved for their quick response and for bringing the situation to a safe conclusion."

Police said there were no collisions as a result of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction, but their investigation was ongoing.
