Operation to crack down on illegal e-scooter use

Riders causing a nuisance on electric scooters are to be the focus of an operation cracking down on "illegal misuse".

Northamptonshire Police said it was receiving more reports from people concerned about private e-scooter riders being driven dangerously.

West Northamptonshire Council said it would be working to educate and warn e-scooter users in Daventry about safety, alongside the police.

The action would take place in the town on two occasions between Thursday and mid-June, the council added.

People have been able to hire the two-wheeled vehicles in Northampton since 2020.

However, privately owned e-scooters must only be used on private land.

Police have the power to seize them if they are being used in an anti-social manner or are causing alarm, harassment or annoyance to the public.

E-scooters would be seized either for no insurance or for riders being underage during the action.

Safer roads team manager, Matt O'Connell, added: "We want to reassure the local community that we are listening to their concerns and acting upon them, and I hope this is demonstrated through this enforcement action."
