Work to remove pool pollution after tanker fire
Shropshire Fire and Rescue ServiceTeams have been deployed to two pools to remove pollution following a fuel tanker fire, the Environment Agency (EA) has said.
Firefighters were called to Marlborough Way in Telford on Tuesday lunchtime and found the lorry alight, with burning fuel running down the street.
The EA said specialist contractors had been employed to remove oil and deploy containment boom barriers to minimise impact to the environment.
It added the majority of the pollutants had been contained within two pools, according to testing, with the EA deploying tankers there.
A spokesperson said: "Our officers will be continuing to monitor the watercourse, and initial results show minimal impact downstream of these pools."
The agency said it was understood the two pools referred to Sinclair Pool and Parker's Pool.
Newdale Pool had been checked on Wednesday and Thursday and the EA was confident there was no sign of pollution there, it stated.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue ServiceA nearby primary school was evacuated because of the blaze, which took five hours to extinguish. Nine fire engines were deployed.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service advised people to stay away from the scene and asked those living nearby to keep all windows and doors closed.
It said it was able to prevent the blaze spreading to nearby homes or the school.
