Wandering terrapin rescued from busy road
Nottinghamshire PoliceA terrapin was rescued after crossing a busy road in Nottinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire Police said PC Chris Brentnall was travelling along Colwick Loop Road in Gedling, near the junction with Magenta Way, shortly before 15:00 BST on Tuesday, when he stopped to assist what appeared to be a broken-down vehicle.
However, the officer soon discovered the driver had spotted a shelled creature in the middle of the road and had pulled over to bring it to safety.
Brentnall said the reptile appeared to be "unharmed" and was taken to a veterinary centre to be checked over and scanned for a chip.
However, what was originally thought to be a tortoise was identified as a yellow-bellied slider, a type of non-native terrapin which is not legal to own and cannot be released into the wild.
Minister Vets in Burton Joyce said the terrapin was unharmed but as there was no owner to be traced, the creature would be transferred to a licensed rescue centre in Kent.
