Assault leaves man in life-threatening condition

Essex Police has appealed for information about an assault that has left a man in a life-threatening condition.

He was found with a head injury by officers called to St Mary's Lane in Maldon shortly before 18:50 BST on Sunday.

The force said it believed it had been a "targeted incident" and not a wider threat to the community, but was making inquiries and providing reassurance patrols.

Det Insp Emma Habbershaw said: "I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident, saw anything unusual or has dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage to get in touch as soon as possible. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital."

"Our investigation is progressing at pace and a dedicated team is working to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible," she continued.

"Officers will continue to maintain a visible presence in the area and anyone with concerns is welcome to speak to them."
