Free water safety sessions for young people
Hull City CouncilYoung people are invited to a free water safety session in Hull on Sunday.
Hull Culture and Leisure (HCAL) has linked up with Kingston Kayak Club to deliver the session in the heated lido at Albert Avenue Pools.
Both said it was in response to water deaths elsewhere in the country this summer.
Dave Rawding, the club's senior coach, said: "Too many lives have been lost needlessly. As a club with real experience on the water, we felt a responsibility to act. This isn't just about rescue, it's about awareness."
He added: "People will enter the water, especially in hot weather, so it's vital they understand the risks and how to stay safe. Too often, those trying to help become casualties themselves. Our aim is simple: give young people and adults the knowledge to make safer decisions."
The course, from 09:00 to 10:30 BST, will begin with a classroom session before moving to a practical lesson in the lido.
It aims to help participants understand the risks associated with open water and how to make safer decisions for themselves and others, said organisers.
Councillor Jackie Dad, deputy leader of Hull City Council whose portfolio includes HCAL, added: "This is not only a fantastic initiative, but also an important one, as it could save lives."
The event is suitable for those aged eight and over. Booking details can be found here.
