An adventure centre in East Yorkshire has issued a warning about the dangers of mixing open water swimming with alcohol.

Welton Waters Activities Centre, near Brough, said groups of young people had been gathering on the east bank of the lake.

The venue, run by Hull Trinity House, has no safety boats on the water after 16:30 BST, meaning there is no rescue cover for anyone getting into trouble after then.

"There have been tragic incidents in other parts of the country and we absolutely do not want to see anything like that happen here," said a spokesperson for the charity.

The warning follows a spate of incidents during a record-breaking heatwave over the bank holiday weekend.

On Sunday, a 15-year-old boy drowned in a lake near Lincoln. His family have urged others to be aware of the dangers of water.

Parts of England and Wales are in an official heatwave, with health alerts issued in some areas by the UK Health Security Agency.

Ahead of the recent soaring temperatures, Yorkshire Water had advised people not to swim in reservoirs.

Humberside Fire and Rescue has also issued a warning about the dangers of jumping into water on a hot day. It said: "Don't let others talk you into it. Open water is unpredictable, cold and has hidden dangers – it's not worth the risk."

Welton Waters has asked parents and guardians to speak to their children about the risks of swimming in open water.

"We want everyone to enjoy the lake safely, but the current behaviour is creating a very real danger," the spokesperson said.
