Firefighters leave scene of major moorland wildfire

Watch: Firefighters were called to a major fire on Tintwistle Moor last week

Firefighters have left the scene of a large wildfire in Derbyshire, which started over a week ago.

About 200 hectares (494 acres) of land was affected by the blaze on Tintwistle Moor, above Woodhead Road in Glossop, on 24 June.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) said crews have "now fully come away", and the area has been handed over to on-site teams, which will continue to damp down hot spots.

DFRS said firefighters had faced "extremely challenging conditions" since crews were called to the scene.

In an update on Thursday, the fire service said: "Final fire crews left the scene at 12:00 hours and handed over to United Utilities and the wider Peak District Fire Operations Group.

"They will continue to damp down hotspots within the area of Arnfield Moor and the Didsbury Intake.

"While the risk to the public is low, we strongly advise people stay away from these areas to allow our partner agencies to carry out their work safely and effectively, and to help prevent any further fires."

Ahead of a possible heatwave in the coming days in parts of the UK, DFRS has urged visitors to take extra care as high temperatures increase the risk of wildfires.

It thanked the public for their "continued cooperation and support".
