Dozens of firefighters tackle large heathland blaze

More than 65 firefighters are currently tackling a large heathland blaze on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it first received reports of a gorse fire at Headon Warren in the West Wight just after 09:00 BST Thursday morning.

The service said that, as of 13:00, their were more than 65 firefighters in attendance with the blaze affecting an area of roughly 800 by 400 metres (2600 by 1300 ft).

Crews were using "a range of firefighting tactics", including water jets, hose lines and specialist vehicles, to bring the fire under control, it said.

Teams from Newport, Cowes, Ventnor, Freshwater, Shanklin, East Cowes and Ryde were all initially in attendance at the blaze.

Local farmers were also assisting with firefighting efforts by using tractors to create fire breaks and help crews contain the fire, the service said.

It added that members of the public should avoid the area whilst attempts to extinguish the fire were ongoing.

Wightlink, which runs ferry services between England's south coast and the Isle of Wight, said it was also assisting the fire service - which had led to some delays for passengers.

"We have transported nine fire engines via our Portsmouth route and one via Lymington," the transport firm said.

"We have at times held and therefore delayed service to ensure the emergency services can reach their destinations as fast as possible."

"While delays to our service at current are minimal, we understand this can be frustrating, so we thank you for your patience and understanding while this emergency is being dealt with."
