Louise Small and Luke Holmes set new 5km course records

Records were broken in wet and windy conditions to kick start the Easter Running Festival in Guernsey.

Jersey's Luke Holmes set a new 5km (3.1m) course record, leading the field home in 14:15, with Louise Small, from Aldershot, Farnham & District, becoming the fastest woman on the west coast 5km (3.1m) with a time of 15:44.

The records were set on the opening event, which had 241 senior runners taking part, while a number of colts and juniors were competing around the Vazon sand dunes in another event.

Holmes, from Jersey Spartans, said he was "surprised" by the time he achieved.

'Unexpected'

He added: "I was hoping for something near 14:30 so to be well under that I felt over the moon.

"I knew my fitness was good after a few weeks training down in Namibia but to be 45 seconds faster than last year was unexpected."

Throughout the weekend, Small ended up winning three races, closing it out with a 10km (6.2m) time of 34:05.

The Aldershot, Farnham & District athlete secured the overall women's title 15 years after she last wore the crown.
