Households to get two new wheelie bins

Households in Richmondshire are to get two new wheelie bins in a bid to standardise waste collection across North Yorkshire.

A blue-lidded bin will be used for paper and card, while a red-lidded bin will take glass, plastic, cans and cartons, according to North Yorkshire Council.

They will be collected separately on alternate fortnights, with the new system due to begin in October.

The council said the new model had seen recycling increase in quality and quantity in the former Selby and Ryedale districts, with officials adding that the aim was to create a single recycling service that was more efficient, easier to operate and compliant with new national legislation.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, a recent survey of households in Ryedale found 83% of those taking part said they were either happy or very happy with the new arrangements, while 85% said they found the system easy or very easy to use.

Meanwhile, over half of those participating in the survey said they were recycling more than before and 81% believed the changes would improve recycling across North Yorkshire.

Richard Foster, the authority's executive member for waste services, said: "We need to make sure our recycling service continues to offer value for money and remains fit for the future, while doing everything we can to boost recycling rates and support our carbon-reduction goals.

"So, we are now rolling out the improved service to former Richmondshire residents and will be writing to them this week advising them to keep an eye out for their wheelie bins, which will be delivered in the coming weeks."

Residents would receive further information about collection dates in late September, according to the authority.

The council added that the changes would continue to be introduced in phases across the rest of North Yorkshire as it worked towards a single countywide recycling service.
