Bike and car night paused over safety concerns

A popular car and motorbike meet-up has been paused after organisers said some attendees ignored requests from volunteer marshals.

Weymouth Bike and Car Night said in a statement a small number of those taking part "decided to do their own thing", ignoring instructions from marshals and volunteers from road safety charity DocBike.

The event will not run again until 3 September. Organisers said there would be no authorised gathering on the promenade in the meantime.

Weymouth Town Council said it understood the event would not take place for three weeks in August "due to safety concerns".

The council said the safety of participants, the public, staff and volunteers was "of the highest priority", adding that it was looking forward to welcoming the event back in September.

The weekly meet-up usually runs every Thursday evening from April to September, gathering at the Jubilee Clock on the Esplanade before vehicles line up along the promenade.

It typically runs from 18:00 to 20:30 BST, with a small charge to display vehicles going to a nominated local charity.

DocBike and Dorset Police have been approached for further comment.
