Tom as George, plus dragon

Leave the dragon alone George!

I 'Wow' to Thee My Country

No-one could ever accuse BBC Essex of not marking England's national day. St Georges Day on The Ray Clark Breakfast Show was an overwhelming success - could we have found a true anthem for England?

Watch out for that Dragon!

Thaxted was certainly the place to be on Wednesday as we celebrated St. Georges Day - England's national day.

Ray Clark Breakfast Show team members Tom (George), Owen (Dragon) and Paul (the normal one, possibly) headed to the village for our outside broadcast and thank you if you were one of the many who went along - or sang along to the radio.

Here's Tom's on the spot report......

"Well I never, I've still got goose-bumps! It was great to see so many people turn out on Wednesday to celebrate Englishness for St. George's Day. If you didn't hear it, the Ray Clark Breakfast Show took over Thaxted Church.

"Hundreds of people from all over Essex, including 75 children from the local primary school, came to sing that very English song, 'I Vow to Thee My Country' - a song that was composed in that very church by Gustav Holst.

"I love Thaxted. The people that live there are amazing and they turned out in force to sing their hearts out. If you missed it find out more and listen to the singing here.

"Now after making so many friends in the village, Ray Clark is certain to be given the Freedom of Thaxted and will hopefully soon be seen exercising his right to walk a flock of sheep through the streets to the local pub. He may start a campaign shortly!"

Another great cartoon

Don't think you've got it quite right...

Where's my pen?

Planet Ray cartoonist, Gordon from Colchester, heard about the credit card company that has been sending me cheap pens in a bid to get me to sign up with them.

Strangely, since the recent credit crunch has been in the news they've not been in touch. Not sure that I made myself clear though Gordon .....

Layer Road is Blue

We had a number of calls on Friday's show about the demise of Layer Road as the home to Colchester Utd.

Front of Colchester United Football Club

Layer Road is set for its last hurrah!

We spoke about the dog on the pitch: Colchester 4-0 Brentford. Brian, a Brentford supporter, called and suggested that the dog scored one of the goals. It was huge national news in 1970.

Planet Ray listener Irene has lived opposite the ground for 25 years and spoke of her fond memories.

And check out a great video about the history of the ground on www.youtube.co.uk

Just search for "Layer Road, end of an era, 1937-2008, R.I.P."

The story that you write

This week's story was started by Sophie from St. Margaret's C of E Primary School, thanks Sophie.
