Exploring home and longing
BRYAN - I love this notion of home and comfort that runs throughout it. Why why did you want to to write about that?
NADINE - So I think for me, home is more than one place. And actually for me, home is, is people, you know. And in this poem, my home is, home is my aunt. And I think anybody who is a diaspora kid. So who maybe you have homes as in emotional homes. I’m not rich, not many, many houses. But maybe you have homes in different places and with different peoples and in different countries, and that can often feel like no matter which home you’re in, there’s a part of you that’s also longing for the other. There’s a part of you that’s also missing and longing for that. And so in writing the poem, it’s both about recognising that I’m in Scotland and in my home here, but also longing for my aunt and missing her too. So it’s a poem of diaspora, and it’s it’s a love poem, actually, I think in that sense.
