Creating characters
BRYAN - You’ve talked about your beloved auntie. But. But where do the characters for your work come from?
NADINE - So in my poetry, very much from my real life. But then in my novels, I feel like my characters are either a mix of me, so I take parts of myself and put them inside, or sometimes they have qualities that I want to be like. So in my second novel, The Hidden Story of Estie Noor, the character’s really brave and she’s really feisty, and sometimes I want to be a bit more feisty. So you get to to live differently. And sometimes when you come up with your characters, it can feel like magic because you feel like this, this whole new character, this whole new person has formed in your mind and you don’t know where they’ve come from, but they feel so real to you, like they’re real people. And you have to remember. But this came from me. So I sometimes think it’s almost a certain magic the way we do come up with characters and the way they come to us.
