This clip features 11-year-old Ike describing the traditional Dutch architecture of her hometown of Haarlem in the Netherlands.

Like many Dutch towns, Haarlem has traditional cheese shops and flower stalls.

The Haarlem area is famous for flowers and bulbs, and Ike introduces us to a flower-grower who is tending the bulbs in his fields and planting others in the bulb sheds to make sure he gets the best flower crops.

Ike loves to dance in her spare time and we see her taking a street dance class at her local dance school. Her time is also spent taking care of a new addition - her Shetland pony, Billy.

  • Connect
  • Sense of place

Questions to explore

  • Where is Haarlem?
  • Where are the Netherlands?
  • What is a settlement?
  • What makes a place special and/or unique?
  • How can people travel around a town or city? Which types of transport are sustainable?
  • How is Haarlem similar and different to where I live?
  • What impact does a river have on a modern town or city?
  • What different ways can land be used?
  • What effect do seasons have on peoples’ work and leisure activities?
  • What else can we find out about Haarlem?

Suggested learning opportunities

A trip to Haarlem

  • Pupils use maps to plan a trip from their home town over to Haarlem considering what modes of transport they will use, how they will cross the English Channel, where they will visit while they are there (can they visit similar places to those that Mika introduces in the video?).
  • Throughout the video Mika uses a bicycle and there are numerous bikes in the background. Pupils can discuss how to make places safer places to use bicycles, including what it is like in their neighbourhood and even whether it would be possible to cycle all the way to Haarlem and whether that would impact the route taken.

Local land use survey

  • Pupils conduct a survey of the different land uses found within the local area this can either be by following a set circular route or through the use of set points along a transect. These can be added to a map, adding symbols and a key to represent the different land uses discovered.

Ideas for going further and links

  • Pupils could carry out an enquiry about the city of Haarlem to find out more about what life is like there from different perspectives, perhaps interviewing pupils and teachers from one of its schools.
