Ryan Gerard is a little shy with his pace from 20 feet. That feels like a big miss given there wasn't much of a break in the putt.

Was Rory McIlroy's birdie on the 10th the start of a back-nine charge?

The six-time major champion plays a laser-guided wedge into seven feet on the 12th and drops in another birdie. A couple more shaprish might make this very interesting indeed for the Northern Irishman.

That's horrible for Ludvig Aberg, who finds the fairway bunker on the 10th and then struggles to get back in to decent shape with his second.

His wedge on flies almost 30 feet past the pin and he drops a shot just as his playing partner Adam Scott wafts an iron into three feet and then collects his first birdie of the day.

Stress-free pars for Scottie and Chris on the par-three 11th, although Gotterup may be slightly disgruntled to miss a birdie try from 18 feet.

This could be some fight down the closing nine holes. Nobody has been better on this stretch than the Norwegian this week.

Although, don't count out Ludvig Aberg just yet - the Swede has played the final three holes in a cumulative seven under par this week, with seven birdies and two pars.

Chris Gotterup can't take advantage of his super second shot, his birdie putt on the 10th staying above ground.

But Scottie Scheffler is not passing up this opportunity. His ball never looked anywhere other than heading for the centre of the cup after it left his putter. He's back in a share of the lead.

He elects to putt from a good 10 yards off the green and comes up half a dozen feet short.

Up ahead on the 10th, Scottie Scheffler hits a pin-seeker of his own to give himself a good look at a birdie from around six feet to move back alongside Viktor.

Chris Gotterup's ball is buried in the rough but he muscles it up onto the green, about twice as far from the hole as Scottie's.

Classy work by Viktor Hovland on the eight. A drive down the middle, a wedge to four feet and a straightforward putt. He's back in the lead.

Ryan Gerard misses a makeable effort from about a dozen feet, his ball missing the hole by half an inch.

It's been a topsy-turvy day for Rory McIlroy, who bounces back immediately with a birdie on the 10th. He needs to tear up this back nine to have any sort of whiff of winning this event for a fourth time.

Pars all round on the ninth as Scottie Scheffler and Chris Gotterup both take two putts to get their balls in the hole.

Ludvig Aberg raises his hat to acknowledge a fan as he rolls in his second birdie of the day to get back to 12 under. Just what he'd have wanted after those two bogeys a little earlier.

His playing partner Adam Scott has made eight straight pars so far and both remain well placed for a charge.

Alex Fitzpatrick is well and truly on the birdie train. The Tour Championship debutant plays a wonderful wedge into four feet on the 15th hole and taps in for this third birdie on the spin.

The Englishman is just three strokes back.

Alex Fitzpatrick flies his ball 218 yards to 21 inches on the par-three 15th for a kick-in birdie. It's the second time today he's made back-to-back birdies and all of sudden he's in the mix for a top five finish.

While Cam Young is able to chip into three feet and salvage a three, Rory McIlroy's second funnels 21 feet past the cup and it's another shot gone.

Back on the seventh, Viktor Hovland follows Scottie Scheffler in making an unforced error from the middle of the fairway.

The Norwegian isn't in the sand but he might wish he was. His ball trundles through the green and catches a slope off the back that trickles his ball into the cabbage.
