Aaron Ramsey earned his first victory as Oxford United boss with victory on the road at Stevenage.
Moments after making a double substitution in the 65th minute, the pair combined to get the opening goal as Stanley Mills crossd from the right for Gatlin O'Donkor to steer a header past goalkeeper Filip Marschall.
The goalscorer then raced clear with three minutes to go, getting to the ball ahead of Marschall and being fouled.
Cameron Brannagan hit the penalty perfectly to the right of the Stevenage stopper and into the bottom corner to seal the points.
Jordan Roberts did pull one back with practically the last kick of the game, but the U's had been the better of the two sides over the entire piece.
Stevenage sent a couple of good headers wide in the first half, the first by Lewis Freestone and the second for Carl Piergianni.
But Louie Sibley had also tested Marschall in a first period where both teams had suffered injuries, with Oxford losing goalkeeper Jamie Cumming, and Jasper Pattenden going off for Stevenage.
