Cyle Larin gave Southampton an early lead against Stoke City
Southampton left it late against Stoke City to collect their first three points of the Championship season, scoring twice in the final moments having been level for the majority of the second half.
Saints took an early lead as Cyle Larin was played through on goal and finished for the opener, but Stoke's Ethan Galbraith levelled when he converted Sam Gallagher's cross from the right past Daniel Pertez.
Former Potters loanee Divin Mubama then fired Saints ahead with one minute plus stoppage time remaining, before Ryan Manning converted a penalty late on after Sam Edozie had been fouled by Svante Ingelsson, who was shown a second yellow card and sent off.
Tonda Eckert's Southampton remain bottom of the table on minus one point, having started the campaign on minus four - which was one of their punishments for last season's 'Spygate' scandal.
Southampton's owner Dragan Solak was in attendance for the game, watching the teams walk out as the home fans loudly chanted in support of their head coach Eckert, and the Saints owner will have liked what he saw early on as Saints took the lead after eight minutes in the St Mary's sunshine.
Flynn Downes slotted a pass through for Larin to chase and the Canada striker coolly struck the ball through the legs of Viktor Johansson for his third goal of the season.
Stoke's response came just before the half-hour mark, Gallagher's cross from the right running all the way through for Galbraith, who fired the ball home for his first ever Potters goal.
Larin again broke through on goal in the second half but a crucial sliding challenge from Eric Bocat prevented the forward from getting a shot away.
After a period of Southampton pressure, Stoke nearly found the net themselves when Sorba Thomas cut inside and swung a cross into the box which was narrowly headed wide by Robert Bozenik at the back post.
But Saints finally found a breakthrough when Manchester City loanee Mubama - who had just come off the bench - was played in by Finn Azaz and slotted the ball into the far corner, while the hosts made sure of the points in added time when Manning netted from the spot.
Defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis was not named in Southampton's matchday squad, with his future at the club uncertain following a rejected bid by Aston Villa.
Saints still need to improve - Eckert
Listen: Eckert on Southampton's win against Stoke
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:
"If you look at things on the footballing side then we know there are things that we need to improve on.
"It's true for every team at this stage of the season and it's also important that you can find a way to grind out games.
"We knew we would have to dig deep today, it's not an easy one and the boys did that especially well in the second half."
Listen: Robins on Stoke's defeat by Southampton
Stoke boss Mark Robins told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I thought we played really well and that was more like I want to see from us.
"I thought we were really good, we've been really good this week in training, but I think we ended up tiring in areas that we can't strengthen right now.
"We made the changes, the changes weren't good enough, we just didn't get the right quality on there.
"For whatever reason, whether people are sulking or whatever they want to do, whether they want to be here or not, you have to make a contribution in a positive way and that didn't happen."
