Candy Cabs Ep 3/3

Tuesday 19 April
9.00-10.00pm BBC ONE

Elaine (Lisa Millett, left) and Jackie (Jo Joyner) head to an employment tribunal
Elaine (Lisa Millett, left) and Jackie (Jo Joyner) head to an employment tribunal

Jackie and Elaine go on a spying mission and are shocked when they discover Tony's little secret, in the final episode of the comedy.

There's no time to dwell on what they've found, however, as they head to an employment tribunal where they face a charge of discrimination against men. Though they have no proof, they suspect that rival cabbie operator, Kenny Ho, is behind the accusations – which could spell the end for the all-girl Candy Cabs.

Still desperately trying to drum up business, they think they've hit upon a winner when they get a trial run with Girls On The Go, an all-female Seniors' Club. However, in true Candy fashion, nothing goes to plan when an outing to a garden centre with the feisty old ladies lands them in some very deep water.

Meanwhile, Elaine begs Jackie to keep Tony onside until the dreaded discrimination tribunal but, still in bits over what she's discovered, Jackie can't stop herself confronting him. To add to their worries, Witney tells them she's about to go to Spain with her dad, leaving them to question whether Dennis has finally decided to become a decent father – or whether he has more dastardly plans up his sleeve.

On the day of the tribunal, Jackie decides that desperate times call for desperate measures – much to Elaine's horror. Kenny also has a few surprises of his own.

Jackie is played by Jo Joyner, Elaine by Lisa Millett and Tony by Paul Nicholls. Candy Cabs also stars Denis Lawson, John Henshaw, Jodie Prenger, Claire Sweeney, Melanie Hill, Tom Goodman-Hill and Daniel Ryan.

Britain's Next Big Thing Ep 2/7

Tuesday 19 April
8.00-9.00pm BBC TWO

Boots buyers Sarah Clark-Martin, Andy Atkinson and Allison Hands
Boots buyers Sarah Clark-Martin, Andy Atkinson and Allison Hands

High street giant Boots opens its doors to just 10 lucky hopefuls, as the search continues for Britain's Next Big Thing.

Selected from hundreds of applicants, each designer or producer has just 15 minutes to impress the buyers with their products. The health, beauty and pharmacy market is worth over £26 billion, meaning that this is big business.

Presenter Theo Paphitis offers advice and comfort to the prospective suppliers every step of the way, while explaining how Boots can take "somebody's branded products and create 30 or 40m pounds of turnover with it."

First into the pitching room are friends Stuart Jolley and Will Butterworth, fresh out of college with their product, Wingman body wipes: a new range of face and body deodorising wipes specifically catering for modern guys on the go. Next up is Una Tucker with her massage tool, The Kneader. After spending more than £40,000 on her creation, she says: "A lot of blokes think it looks like a knuckle-duster, but it isn't."

Single mum Tracy Wood, who cooks up her eczema cream in her kitchen at home, dreams of seeing her products on a shop shelf. However, as Theo explains, taking her kitchen-sink formula nationwide would require making medical claims that are highly regulated and "the testing required to prove the benefits ... is hugely expensive, even for someone like Boots."

Dr Shamus Husheer is next to meet the buying team with his innovative ovulation tester, which records minute changes in a woman's body temperature to predict when she's most fertile. Last to pitch is Elaine Weston, who thinks there's a niche in the market for skincare products aimed at nine- to 12-year-olds.

Filthy Cities – Industrial New York Ep 3/3

Interactive TV
Tuesday 19 April
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO

Historian Dan Snow concludes his journey through the squalid streets of history in 19th-century New York, where he discovers that the Big Apple was rotten to the core.

Just 150 years ago, at the height of the industrial revolution, up to 1,000 migrants a day were arriving in New York on ships from Europe, and CGI reveals the rancid living conditions to which they were welcomed.

Dan explores the tenement slums of the Five Points area of Lower Manhattan, where the massive immigrant population was crammed together and where filth piled metres high in the streets. Infested with cockroaches and lice, the slums were perfect breeding grounds for diseases including cholera and typhoid.

Dan also discovers how the construction of the Croton Aqueduct, the development of waste water sewerage treatment plants and Thomas Edison's discovery of electricity helped shape New York's transformation through the 19th and 20th centuries into the leading modern city it is today.
