As Jesus died on the cross, he pleaded: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." This plea for mercy on behalf of his executioners reflected just how central forgiveness was to Jesus's ministry. Indeed, his words on the subject are still prevalent in our language today: "Love thy neighbour", "Turn the other cheek", and "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us".
But in an increasingly secular society, where Christian virtues are pushed ever more to the margins, is forgiveness still relevant today? In this programme, historian and author Bettany Hughes asks what good this fundamental Christian virtue has done for individuals and society – and what its point really is.
