Kirkham JFC

Kirkham JFC

By Peter Woods
All the news on Kirkham's football week from Peter Woods...

Under 9s:
Kirkham Juniors A 3-1 St Annes

Against the run of play Declan Cartwright made a fine run, crosses the ball to Daniel Robertson who hits a powerful shot through the keeper for number one. Kirkham are on a roll, and clever play by Josh Pownall ends in a pass to Callum Fidling who knocks in number two into the top corner of the net.

Eventually St Annes settle and reply with a well taken goal. Declan responded in style, setting up Josh for Kirkham's third.

The team are now playing well with the midfield of Ritchie Hall, Callum, Josh and Daniel Robertson keeping up constant pressure on St Annes and Declan looking dangerous every time he runs at goal. Despite several close attempts the score remains 3 -1 at half time.

Man of the Match:

Daniel Robertson for another great captain's performance and the most important first goal.

Kirkham Juniors B 8- St Annes

Russell Townsend slid the ball neatly under the keeper after only 2 minutes. Charlie Cottam put Kirkham further ahead by latching onto a poor St Annes clearance. Despite being two up James Pickervance was forced to make several good tackles to keep the St Annes forwards out. Half way through the first half Jack Stainton put the game out of St Annes reach with a terrific run and a hard low shot in to the corner of the net, 3–0. Bradley Wilson and Charlie were now causing St Annes all sorts of problems by running hard and fast down the wings and putting in dangerous crosses.

In the second half, Ben Saxton made it 4–0, and Kirkham now began to attack at will and Scot Widdows made it 5-0. The sixth goal was a great solo effort by Charlie. Ben rounded off a great personal performance by powering in his second goal and Kirkham’s eighth.

Man of the Match:

Charlie Cottam who always looked dangerous going forward and scored two great goals.

Under 15s:
Staining Juniors 1-6 Kirkham Juniors

Kirkham took the lead after 7 minutes, when Hanlon flicked the ball on for Mayor to chase and beat the keeper. The home team didn’t have time to recover as Wensley floated a free-kick onto the head of Ryde who guided it over the keeper. Staining had a lifeline as the home forward steadied himself and hit a great shot past Wyke.

It was a frantic end to the half and the scoring hadn’t finished. On the stroke of half-time, Miller took an inswinging corner from the left, it was only partially cleared and came back to Miller who tucked the ball away.

Half-Time:
Staining 1 Kirkham 4

On 45, Everett prodded the ball over the line for number five, but on 63 minutes came a highly controversial moment as goalkeeper Wyke received his marching orders for handling outside the box. Schofield donned the gloves as the 10 men looked to reorganize, but Everett settled the nerves as he broke down the left and also hit a good shot that was too much for the keeper.

Full-Time:
Staining 1 Kirkham 6

A very stuttering performance from Kirkham as they struggled to cope with a small. heavy pitch and very determined opposition, but this win sees Kirkham equal last seasons points tally with 8 games still to go. Man of the Match goes to Schofield for his all round performance, from strong defending to creating chances with his breaks down the right.

Under 17s:
Kirkham Juniors 2-0 YMCA Juniors

Kirkham had the daunting task of facing YMCA Juniors, fresh from their Lancashire Cup Final victory at County HQ, Leyland, six days earlier.

YMCA had an opportunity to take the lead after just two minutes, Andrews flashing a header just wide. The game was finely balanced, but three minutes into the second half, Kirkham took the lead when Ridings low cross was sliced into his own net by defender Colwell. On fifty-three minutes, YM managed to breach the home defence, only for Wilson to come out and save well at Butler’s feet. With a quarter of an hour remaining, Clarke beat two men in the area before hitting a shot that crept under the YM ‘keeper for the crucial second goal.

Despite it being a highly-competitive match, it was generally played in a good spirit and was well controlled by the referee. Congratulations to YMCA for their well-deserved success at Leyland– but well done to Kirkham, this was their afternoon.
