Under 9s: Fleetwood Gym “A” 0-6 Kirkham Juniors On a bright sunny morning Kirkham's early pressure saw Russell break free and score just after 1 min, and then another 10 mins later. A period of good football saw Russell take the ball on his own down the right, beat several players, cut into the box and reached his hat-trick with a deflection from an acute angle. Kirkham started the 2nd half determined to impose their superiority and within 4 mins Jack had scored a cracker. Fleetwood had their fair amount of possession but couldn't hold onto the ball for any length of time. A brilliant Kirkham counter-attack saw Jack scoring his second goal after running half the length of the pitch. From the kick off Russell broke free to score his fourth. Sustained attacking play from Kirkham followed. Fleetwood were unlucky when their No 6 hit the ball just over the bar and another excellent Fleetwood break was stopped by a last ditch tackle from James to keep a clean sheet. Both teams looked tired in the final minutes with Fleetwood pushing for a consolation goal and hitting the bar from James's headed clearance which signalled full time and a good value 0 - 6 win for KJFC. Man of the Match: James Pickervance for another great defending game. Fleetwood Gym "B" 1 v 0 Kirkham Juniors Kirkham showed spirit with good early defending and some great save from Edward the keeper. Elliot and Daniel worked hard in the middle of the park to keep Fleetwood under some pressure with Daniel hitting the side netting and then forcing the Fleetwood keeper to make a fine save. Scott put in some good tackles and Callum kept up the work on the left side of midfield. The second half was very different. Kirkham began to dominate and run Fleetwood ragged. Numerous goal opportunities were spurned by Josh, Daniel, Elliot and in fact most of the team. Fleetwood hung on and from a lone foray into the Kirkham half Fleetwood scored. Kirkham responded well and kept up almost constant attacks and strikes on the Fleetwood goal; but a combination of a good Fleetwood goalkeeping and the inability of Kirkham to hit the goal on most attacks saw the final score remain 1 - 0 to Fleetwood. A disappointing result for the Kirkham team who had nothing to show for their 2nd half dominance. Under 14s Kirkham Juniors 4-1 Clifton Rangers Scorers : Adam Cartwright, Craig Burke and Nathan Cook (2) Kirkham got off the mark early when an excellent run down the left wing by Adam Cartwright provided the first goal. Clifton replied just before half time levelling the match at the whistle. Kirkham continued to go forward and Craig Burke put them in front again early in the half. Some neat interchanging play from Ross Ainsworth and Nathan Cook enabled Cook to put two more away for Kirkham making the final score 4-1 to Kirkham. This was an impressive win for Kirkham and a very encouraging performance, all the lads got on the field and everyone played well on the day. Under 15s: Thornton Cleveleys 0-2 Kirkham Juniors (Hogan Cup) There was a break from League action as the U15s faced a tricky tie away to Thornton in the first round of the Hogan Cup. Kirkham upped the tempo and foreced a succession of corners but they couldn't get a decisive touch on any of them. However, Kirkham made the breakthrough after 22 minutes when a corner was swung in by Hanlon and Ryde lost his marker to nod in at the far post. Thornton came back strongly and Wyke had to be alert to get down to a well struck free-kick. A minute later, however, Kirkham doubled their advantage. McCulloch brilliantly won the ball on the right and shipped it to Mayor, who calmly knocked the ball sideways into the path of Hanlon and Hanlon's RIGHT FOOT did the rest. The second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side, and it was Kirkham that finished the half stronger. Thornton came out for the 2nd half fired up, looking to get an early breakthrough. Kirkham lost Baines after two yellow cards, so Mayor dropped into midfield to help out McCulloch, Gallagher and Everett, and Hanlon was then left to plough the furrow as the lone striker. Kirkham were in no mood to surrender the lead and they worked extremely hard to keep their opponents at bay. Anything that did get through was ably dealt with by the Kirkham rearguard of Schofield, Wensley, Ryde and Morgan-done. This was a much improved performance from Kirkham against a very good side that were on a decent run themselves. Under 16s: Kirkham Juniors 4-1 New Longton Rovers Two very evenly matched sides put on a great display down at Coronation Road. The home side took the lead late in the first half with strikes from Lewis Rae and Shaun Till. The second half saw the visitors step up their effort and the home side were lucky to go further ahead with a strike from Neil Hardy. New Longton eventually got the goal they deserved mid way through the second half, and with their tails up they could have had more but for some resolute defending. A late goal from Dean Ainsworth sealed the points, but to their credit the visitors never gave up and played all the way to the whistle. A great game of football played in a sporting way by two good sides. Man of the match for Kirkham was Sushant Gurung who started in midfield and finished up front, a real bag full of energy and enthusiasm. Credit again to the visitors who played a big part in a very entertaining game. Under 17s: Foxhall 1-2 Kirkham Juniors Kirkham had to travel to face the side currently second in the table. Kirkham had the advantage of a strong wind at their backs in the first half, but they didn't look like scoring. Foxhall had the majority of the ball, but strong defending kept them at bay. Kirkham looked more dangerous facing the wind after half time, and they took a deserved - if fortunate - lead on fifty-five minutes when Hart's fine cross was headed over his own 'keeper by a Foxhall defender. Five minutes later, the 'keeper made a good save to prevent Clarke from doubling the lead, but two minutes later the scores were level when Foxhall’s Richie hit an unstoppable shot from thirty yards. Kirkham pressed to regain the lead, and with four minutes remaining, Kirkham won a corner and Clarke's flag kick eluded everybody, finding its way into the corner of the net. There was a scare at the other end, but Dodd was on the line to clear the effort, and shortly afterwards the final whistle sounded to signal a winning start to 2006 for Steve Doughty's side. It was an excellent all-round team performance, but special credit should go to the back five of Wilson, Hart, Curran, Rossall (and his second half replacement, Lennehan) and Shelliker. |
