Before watching the film

Using a world map, locate India and the city of Bangalore (Bengaluru). Ask students to write a locational description of where the city is within India.

Look at the four levels of industry: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. Ask students what types of jobs are found in each sector.

Students could make predictions on what type of industries they will see in Bangalore.

Introduce key terms such as:
Multinational company: a company with offices and factories in more than one country.
Entrepreneur: a person who sets up a new business.

During watching the film

You may wish to stop at relevant points during this short film to pose questions and check understanding or wait until the end. Useful questions might include:

  • Why is Bangalore known as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of India?
  • What risks are involved in becoming an entrepreneur?
  • Why do the entrepreneurs want to grow their businesses outside of India?
  • Why is it important to speak a range of languages?
  • What makes the electric vehicles innovative?
  • Why were the children surprised by the technology used?

After watching the film

Discuss the students’ predictions. Were they right about the types of industry they would see in Bangalore? What types of industry did they see and how would these be categorised into the types of industry?

Ask students what type of infrastructure is needed to establish a secondary or tertiary industry - for exampl,e communication lines, access roads and water supplies.

Students could research Mahindra, the Indian car manufacturer mentioned in the clip. It is one of India’s largest vehicle manufacturers. Where are they located in India and have they extended their manufacturing into any other countries? What makes Mahindra unique in India?

Where next?

Research an Indian MNC such as:

  • Tata Group
  • Bank of India
  • Reliance Industries.

Find out where they operate and build a case study of the MNC.
