History has been made at the newly renamed 'Aaronimink' Golf Club with a stunning performance from Aaron Rai making him only the eighth Englishman since 1940 to win a major - and the first at the US PGA for more than 100 years.

It's also the first time Europeans have claimed the opening two majors of a season.

We've loved seeing the world's best struggle and that's just a warm-up for Shinnecock Hills and the US Open in less than four weeks.

More from US PGA champion Aaron Rai:"It definitely feels like a journey. Everyone playing in the field this week has a great journey to be able to share, and I'm no exception to that. Yeah, so much goes into it from being a junior golfer to developing the game to have aspirations of turning professional.

"Then you realise once you turn professional how good some of these guys are and how strong the level of professional golf is, not just on the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and all the feeders that go into it.

"So, yeah, it's a really long journey to even get to compete at major championships at events like the PGA. Yeah, to be stood here, it still hasn't sunk in for sure. Amazing journey."

And how did Rory McIlroy feel about his performance?: "I think not birdieing the two par fives and making the bogey at the drivable par-four 13th. To me I felt like I played the golf I needed to play the rest of the way. If I birdied the two par fives and turned that five into a three on 13, the day looks very different."

What's next? "I'm going to take a couple weeks off, and then Memorial will be my next one."

Jon Rahm on Aaron Rai: "haven't spent a lot of time with him. But I have heard consistently there's very few people that are nicer and kinder human beings than Aaron Rai.

"Anybody that wears or uses head covers in his irons because he coveted his irons when he was a kid so much that he wanted to respect the equipment so much, and to still do it shows a lot about a person.

"I have heard absolutely nothing but good or great things about Aaron Rai. He's been playing great golf. He's a fantastic golfer. He's been able to perform really well.

"What he did today is nothing short of special."

Xander Schauffele on Aaron Rai: "I'm super happy for him. He's such a good dude. Rarely do you feel like people work way harder than you. I feel like I've played a pretty good amount of time, and Aaron is always there. He's always in the gym. He's always on the range.

"I think that's what it's about to be a major champion. You puts the work in when nobody's looking. Super pumped for him and his team."

"You know you've arrived when you're in the middle of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm in the middle of a major.

The top of the world rankings are peppered with British golfers. We spend so much time talking about Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Now we have someone else to talk about.

This is truly a golden era of British golf.

The total prize money for this year's US PGA Championship was confirmed on Saturday as a record $20.5m (£15.4m).

That's a $1.5m increase from 12 months ago.

The total purse for the entire tournament was just over $5m in 2000.

It's very much a sign of the times in professional sport and golf although this isn't the biggest purse in golf.

The US Open and Masters both lead the way in that respect at $21.5m, while the Open Championship was at $17m (£12.75m) at Royal Portrush last summer.

As well as that mahoosive trophy, Aaron Rai will also pocket $3.7m (£2.8m) for this victory.

Not too shabby for four days' heavy lifting.

"I think I have had really good consistency over the last few weeks in terms of practice. My body has been feeling great. I really enjoyed the course this week and held the rounds together as the week went on. It is phenomenal to be stood here.

On his huge birdie putt at 17: "I definitely wasn't trying to hole that putt. The shadow of the pin gave a really nice line for proably the last 10 feet and that helped with the visual of the putt. It was so long, I was just trying to put a good speed on it and it just tracked extremely well in the last half. Amazing seeing that one go in."
