    Smalley -4, Schmid -5 (12)

Alex Smalley and Matti Schmid both get their speed just right as they run their balls up towards the hole.

Par is the order of the day but will that be good enough?

  2. Postpublished at 22:32 BST

    McIlroy -4 (14)

Rory McIlroy needs at least a couple of birdies over the last four holes, but that's not a good start at the 527-yard par four.

He's in the rough left and his ball is sitting down. He does well to thump it on to the green, but it's not what you would call a good chance.

  3. What will get this done?published at 22:32 BST

Right then, Aaron Rai is the first to reach -7 and put a new target on the board.

Will he cling on? Will they reel him in?

So tell us what wins this.

  4. Rose's race run?published at 22:30 BST

    Rose -3 (16)

So tentative from Justin Rose. The Englishman has a birdie putt from eight feet on the par-five 16th which is playing as the easiest hole on the course today but he nudges it right.

With the way things are looking that it would take a remarkable sequence of events for that not to end his challenge.

Aaron Rai just needs to play safe golf now for the final few holes. If he stays at -7, he absolutely breezes this.

    Jar, Solihull

Two majors in, and no-one really seems to have been able to take either one of them by the scruff of the neck in the final round.

    Rai -7 (13)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

Aaron Rai looks so in control.

Tee to green is his strength but he's on fire with that today. Hitting his targets where he needs to, being patient.

He's doing exactly what he needs to in order to keep his nose ahead.

  7. Just a parpublished at 22:28 BST

    Rahm -5, Taylor -4 (11)

A great drive but again the wedge shot in from Jon Rahm isn't as close as he'd like it to be and he has to settle for a par.

Now two behind, Rahm throws the kitchen sink at a three wood off the 12th tee and although he's pin high he's in the thick stuff.

  8. Postpublished at 22:27 BST

    Smalley -4, Schmid -5 (11)

Safe and solid is the order of the day as Alex Smalley and Matti Schmid find the centre of the 12th green.

Neither will be putting from inside 35 feet. Should either walk off with a birdie it will feel like a huge bonus.

  9. Disappointment for Smithpublished at 22:26 BST

    Smith -4 (68)

One last chance for Cameron Smith at the last.

No, another makeable putt stays above ground and that's him out of contention.

It's a two-under 68 to close but it's good to see the 2022 Open champion back contending at one of the big ones.

  10. Rai stretches leadpublished at 22:25 BST

    Aberg -4, Rai -7 (13)

    Aaron RaiImage source, Getty Images

I did tell you Ludvig Aberg's race wasn't quite run. He's just cashed in on the 13th and up to -4 again.

But he'll glance over to playing partner Aaron Rai and watch as he drains a birdie putt of his own.

A two-shot lead for the Englishman.

  11. Birdie for McIlroypublished at 22:25 BST

    McIlroy -4 (14)

A fine shot into the par-three 14th leaves Rory McIlroy about 25 feet for birdie...and he's holed it! What a putt.

Terrific recovery after that ugly five on 13, but has he left himself too much to do with Aaron Rai looking so good out there?

  13. Postpublished at 22:23 BST

    Aberg -3, Rai -6 (12)

Outstanding from Aaron Rai - and the crowd around the 13th green show their appreciation for his bunker shot.

He has splashed that out and left seven feet for birdie.

    Chance to separate himself.

  14. How the final holes are scoringpublished at 22:21 BST

Six holes left - 13 and 16 playing under par

Take your chance on 13 and 16.

Hang in there for the other four.

Over to you Aaron Rai and co.

  15. Birdie chance for Smithpublished at 22:17 BST

    Smith -4 (17)

Cameron Smith needs a birdie at the last to join Justin Thomas at five under in the clubhouse...and he might just get it!

He plays a glorious shot out of the fairway bunker that stops 15 feet long.

    Massive putt coming up.

  16. Postpublished at 22:17 BST

    Smalley -4, Schmid -5 (11)

That's nice from Alex Smalley, who clips his iron into 15 feet on the 11th and gets a trace amount of spin back to draw his ball marginally closer to the cup.

It's a tentative prod down the slope wigth his putter and it just lacks enough gas for his ball to disappear.

Matti Schmid is faced with an awkward distance and ends up leaving himself a long quick putt across the green for birdie.

No cigar for the German there and he collects a par.

  17. Postpublished at 22:16 BST

    Aberg -3, Rai -6 (12)

We've just seen Rory McIlroy fluff his lines on the driveable 13th, so what can the leader do?

Aaron Rai thunders it down the fairway and into the front greenside bunker - that's been a popular place today.

    He'll have a 40-yard bunker shot.

  18. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 22:15 BST

    McIlroy -3, Schauffele -2 (13)

They're making a mess of this hole. After finding sand off the tee and overshooting the green with his second, Xander Schauffele needs two goes with putter in hand from off the back.

    He holes a 13-footer but that's a bogey.

Rory McIlroy's par putt is decent but short and that's his first bogey of the round at a terrible time.

Three behind with five holes left.

RE Jacob 22.02: Aberg is a terrific talent and I do agree in some respects, but he is still only 26 years old and I believe he will win a major. Like everyone else I am enthralled by tonight's bunched leaderboard and fingers crossed for an Aaron Rai win

    Max, Birmingham

Ludvig isn't out of this yet either, but he's only got six holes to get himself going.

  20. 'Couldn't get going on greens'published at 22:13 BST

    Scheffler -2 (69)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

World number one Scottie Scheffler speaking to Sky Sports after finishing at -2: "I am pleased with how I battled all week. I just couldn’t get anything going on the greens. I feel like I gave myself a lot of opportunities but it was a matter of not holing the putts.

"I feel like I’ve had a really good year on the greens so to have a disappointing week on them at a major tournament is a tough pill to swallow.

"But I’ll go home, get some rest, get some practice in on Tuesday and then get ready for the next week."

"That’s the beauty of golf but the frustrating part as well. If I win then I still have to get ready but after a loss, sometimes it gets you even more excited to practice."
