Eastleigh scored a late equaliser to claim a draw and prevent Southend from moving up to second in the National League.
Ryan Colclough came close for Southend after 20 minutes, but his strike was acrobatically kept out by Nick Townsend.
But the visitors were ahead four minutes later as Colclough picked out Promise Omochere at the far post and the forward headed home.
Leon Chambers-Parillon and Colclough each threatened to double Southend's lead early in the second half.
Aaron Blair failed with an acrobatic effort and Hady Ghandour fired wide as the hosts pushed for an equaliser, which eventually came a minute from time as Temi Eweka rose highest to head in.
