    That was, of course, not the result we wanted. However, I see life in this Hearts team. Sort the defence and we could have a good year. Calvin Miller looks like a great addition.

    Some people don't seem to realise the gulf between Benfica and Hearts. One of Benfica's subs cost £40m. That's more than the whole Hearts team put together and more. Hearts were never winning that game. Benfica were far superior all over the pitch. Granted, Hearts' defence needs to be tightened up and stop silly mistakes.

    Some Hearts fans need some perspective. Benfica are a top European side, as are Sturm Graz. This is a new manager and a new squad. This will take time. Can we put the pitchforks away?

  2. Win some, lose some

    Two wins and two defeats for Scottish teams in Europe tonight.

    However, the losses were in the second-tier Europa League and the victories in the third-class Conference League.

    Hearts are definitely out of things against Benfica, but Rangers will be confident of overturning the 2-1 deficit at home to Jagiellonia.

    Motherwell too will feel they are odds on to progress after their win in Finland, but Hibs take a shaky one-goal lead to Shkendija.

    It was much better in the second half.

    The game had so many similarities to my experience against Fiorentina, when Robbie Neilson asked us to defend deeper but be more aggressive in the defensive areas.

    I thought Hearts were that tonight. I thought they were aggressive in the right areas.

    I thought Calvin Miller did a really good defensive job in the second half compared to Alexandros Kyziridis on the other side.

    Wouter Vrancken clearly doesn’t have any pragmatism and doesn’t know how to organise a team. Four games, four defeats and 14 goals conceded.

    We’re now staring at Hearts’ two highest-ever European aggregate defeats within a single month. I have zero confidence that he’s the man to take us forward.

    What an intervention from Warren O'Hora with the winning goal. It changes the contest massively, never mind delivering a big dose of confidence.

    It wasn't a classic display, but they showed enough promise to earn a vital win in dramatic fashion. Promising in Hibs' quest to reach the play-off.

    I like Owen Elding, he's a bundle of energy and he's got great technique and looks like he's got an eye for goal as well.

    I've said this before, I look at Hibs' squad and individually I think they've got loads of good players.

    I think they've got an abundance of talent. It's more that cohesion as a unit. I don't think they've got it as a team yet.

    While it's not the most comfortable scoreline to take to the second leg in Macedonia, a narrow lead is certainly better than a 1-1 draw for Hibs.

    David Gray's side looked good in flashes, but so did visitors who will likely provide a tough test when they play at home.

    The pressure has surely eased on Gray for now, but it's now a massive second leg next week.

    Hearts have been hit for six as Wouter Vrancken's rebuilt side crumbled in Lisbon.

    At times, Benfica cut them apart. At other times, Hearts rallied slightly.

    But mostly, they were punished for some schoolboy errors and don't even have the small victory of leaving with their heads held high.

    Just how damaging a loss could this loss be? Reaction to come.

    Again, Benfica cut Hearts apart with just one ball as Silva slips behind the defender. One-on-one, the Portugal forward can only strike the outside of the far post.

    Just when you thought Hearts would return to Edinburgh with a scoreline that gave them an outside hope of an unlikely comeback, it disappears after a swift Benfica counter.

    Jhon Duran sweeps it home from just inside the penalty box for the striker's first goal for the hosts.

    Ginaluca Prestianni is off for Benfica, much to the delight of Hearts' right-back Jordi Altena. The Dutchman was run ragged by the little Argentine all night.

    Sabri Guendouz is also on - he replaced Pierre Landry Kabore a few minutes ago.

    Miguel Chaiwa loses possession in the middle of the pitch and has to rely on defender Jason Kerr to bail him out of trouble as the midfielder robs Fabrice Tamba of the ball inside the Hibs penalty area.

    Still around five minutes to play at Easter Road and you've got to feel Hibs really need another goal to take into the second leg.
