West Ham will contact the Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL) to raise concerns and request further explanation following the controversial decision to disallow their late equaliser against Arsenal on Sunday.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side thought they had equalised against the Premier League leaders when substitute Callum Wilson hammered home a finish in a packed penalty box following a corner.

But after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the goal was ruled out for a foul by Pablo on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

West Ham may be only one point from safety at present, but their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League are fading fast, according to Opta.

Tottenham, who are 17th in the table, one place above the Hammers, can extend their advantage to four points with a victory at home to Leeds United tonight.

With that in mind, the latest prediction made by Opta's supercomputer shows that West Ham have an 86.65% chance of finishing in the final relegation place.

While Spurs' chances of falling below the Hammers to finish in the relegation places are currently just 13.35%.

After Sunday's results, we now know that one of only two Premier League sides can join Wolves and Burnley in the Championship next season.

But which side will it be?

Sunday's result means it's now a straight scrap between West Ham and Tottenham to avoid being the team to join Burnley and Wolves in the Championship next season.

Nottingham Forest (15th) and Leeds United (16th) are now mathematically safe with two games to spare.

The defeat by Arsenal leaves West Ham in 18th - one point behind Tottenham and seven behind Forest and Leeds, who are level on 43 points.

Spurs can further pull away from the relegation zone if they win against visitors Leeds United tonight (20:00 BST).

Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win over West Ham on Sunday was notable not just for the crucial three points, but for what it said about their season.

It was their seventh 1-0 victory of the campaign – their highest in a Premier League season since 2004-05 – underlining a growing reliance on control and defensive resilience in tight matches.

That tally also places them alongside several recent title-winning sides who built success on similar efficiency. Seven such wins matches the totals recorded by Arsenal’s double-winning team of 1997-98 and Leicester City’s remarkable 2015-16 triumph. Both campaigns were defined by organisation and the ability to edge closely-contested games.

Some champions have gone even further.

Manchester United collected eight 1-0 wins en route to the 1995-96 title, while their 2008-09 side managed 10.

Chelsea’s 2004-05 champions, under José Mourinho, set the benchmark with 11, a reflection of their defensive dominance that season.

Arsenal are not champions yet, but history suggests that teams capable of consistently winning by the narrowest of margins often stay the course.

They still have two games remaining, giving them further opportunities to add to that gritty 1-0 record, if needed.

Those 18 clean sheets have certainly given Arsenal a solid platform with which to pursue a first Premier League title in 22 years - after finishing runners-up in the past three seasons...

With the game still goalless, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya stuck out his right foot to make an outstanding save to deny Mateus Fernandes at one end and it proved all the more decisive as Leandro Trossard went on to score the winner only five minutes later.

Raya was also at the centre of late drama as it was a foul on him by Pablo that led to West Ham's equaliser being ruled out after VAR review.

The Spanish shot-stopper has been pivotal in Arsenal’s title push and with his 18th clean sheet of the season won the Premier League Golden Glove award for the third season running.

The title race may well have some twists and turns yet - certainly if Sunday's match is anything to go by.

It could all have been very different for Arsenal, even before the late VAR drama.

Without goalkeeper David Raya, it could have been the Gunners pushing for a stoppage-time goal...

Arsenal did what they had to do at West Ham, now the onus is back on Manchester City to extend the title race.

Lose or draw at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday and City will trail the Gunners by five or four points, respectively, with an inferior goal difference and two matches remaining.

In that scenario, Arsenal could clinch a first top-flight title since 2004 with a win at home to Burnley on Monday, 18 May.

Should City beat Palace then they would be two points behind the Gunners with two games remaining for both sides.

Arsenal's character has been questioned all season. They have had three games in a week, and they have shown their resilience. They now have an easier rhythm in terms of the game week.

It is good to see an English team in the Champions League final, as it is good for our [Premier League] coefficients, but it is also good to see some variety at the top of the Premier League.

I prefer watching Man City, but they could have won it seven times in nine years - is that good for the Premier League?

Those latest numbers from Opta are reflected in today's poll, at the top of this page.

At present, 88% of those who have taken part believe that Arsenal will win the title, with 12% plumping for Manchester City.

Arsenal moved back five points clear of Manchester City with their win at West Ham.

The Gunners have two games remaining, while City have three more to play.

Here's a reminder that the title will be decided, in this order, by:

• Points - Arsenal lead by five points
• Goal difference - Arsenal lead by +2
• Goals scored - City lead by four goals
• Head-to-head - City hold the advantage having claimed a win and a draw from their two league matches against Arsenal

Taking all these factors into account, as well as their remaining fixtures, Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League title now stand at 87.48%, according to the latest predictions made by statisticians Opta.

Manchester City's chances have drifted out to 12.52%.

For now though, the simple fact is that Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners at West Ham to take a decisive step towards securing the Premier League title.

I think where VAR is consistent and the referees are consistent - and I hate it - is you go anywhere near the goalkeeper and it's a foul.

You go anywhere near the goalkeeper and you give a foul. Throughout my career as a player, I've had a dislike for goalkeepers because of that reason.

I think because they can jump with their arms and so they have got a big advantage and normally they come out with their knees and the studs down your back and stuff.

But I think it is consistent with goalkeepers that [if] you go near them, they normally get a free-kick.
