You hope so and they have to try and bottle that feeling of that second half because I thought the whole place, on the pitch, in the crowd changed, and that's how they have to play. They have to play front footed. They have to take that into the Aston Villa game because if they are passive as they were in the first half they will lose the game. They have to contiune to play [on the front foot].

Next up for Manchester United is a tough game against Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

That will be their last game before the international break, when many thought Michael Carrick would be sacked.

But with tonight's second-half performance under their belt and if the crowd are in the same mood as they were this evening, well, could this mark a turning point?

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was a good night. I have to give a lot of credit to the players for starters, showing that character and quality when we needed it.

"This place does incredible things, magical things and we spoke about it at half-time. I thought we grew into it a little bit first half after giving away the goals too easily.

"We spoke at half-time about how this place can change, it only takes one moment. The boys made every little bit of every little opportunity really and were fantastic in the end."

On what was said at half-time: "Just not to get too disappointed about things, I felty we were coming into the game and getting around their box.

"It didn't feel that way to the players because they were carrying too much frustration and disappointment. I knew that we were doing some good things in the game against a really good team and playing man-for-man as much as they are, you probably get as much failure as success.

"It's still being positive and the boys responded so well second half."

On if this is a turning point: "It's one game so it depends on what happens next. We've got to capitalise on that but tonight the boys showed an awful lot second half.

"Unfortunately with Carlos [Baleba] having to go off and Youri [Tielemens] coming on, I thought he was fantastic and showed everything he is as a personality, a character, his experience to step into a game like that.

"The boys just went with the flow and you could feel how positive [it was], it was nice to see this place like that again."

On Shea Lacey's assist for the winner: "Delighted for Shea. Love him to bits, he's so talented, he's desperate to do well. It's such a good pick out, Matheus [Cunha] takes it on his back foot.

"We moved Matheus inside second half and put Bryan [Mbeumo] wide left to give us better balance. Shea is certainly well liked, the boys respect him a lot. He's desperate to do well and he was even defending at right-back at the end! It shows what he's prepared to do."

On what tonight represents: "It's a win for us as a football club. To see the supporters go home happy is what we live for, to give them performances and nights like this so they can get back again energised.

"As a team, we've shown a lot of character to weather what we've had to. You find out a lot about each other. The players will find out things about me, I certainly do about them and their character, what it means to them and what they're prepared to put in.

"Tonight was right at that moment. It depends what happens next, we've got to make the most of it, we've got to move forward but I'm feeling a lot better about things tonight."

I do think that you create your own luck in football. We have all been there when we have had bad times, but you keep going, you do the right things, you keep working hard and get the rewards.

I just hope that the more experienced boys in the changing room who have been in and heard that before [the atmosphere] know to speak to the younger and new lads, and say this is what it's like at Old Trafford when you're winning. Feel that passion, feel that vibe from the fans, enjoy it and want more.

  8. 'That should be the standard now'published at 22:56 GMT

I said at half-time if you're going to go down, go down fighting. You can accept losing if you've given absolutely everything and they didn't do that in the first half. But they did in the second half. The tone was set with Carlos Baleba. It was so unfortunate he got an injury for it but that was a spark.

Youri Tielemans came on and that changed the game a little bit. There was a little bit more control. When you're playing in these games and you're two down, you're already done, so you may as well go and give it everything you've got. You may as well run around. That should be the standard and now the great thing about it for Michael Carrick is now he has something to refer to.

Anytime there's a difficult situation or pre-match team talk, it's going to be look what you do when you apply yourselves in that manner then you are impossible to live with.

  9. 'Carrick deserves a lot of credit'published at 22:54 GMT

I think Micheal Carrick deserves a lot of credit as well, because if you were in his shoes you are thinking how can I change this around, so whatever he said to the team at half-time that got them on the front-foot and got that belief in them that they could win the game.

You felt it, you could feel that they could win the game, everyone was together.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, speaking to Uefa: "It was a challenging game. I think we started OK in the game, we knew it was going to be tough - they've only had one defeat all season. They're a very, very good team.

"So we talked about what we wanted to do in the game, we started OK and then the goal came from nowhere. We caused ourselves a few issues. In some ways understandable with the run we've been on, a little bit anxious and a few nerves at times.

"Then I thought we grew into the game a bit at the end of the first half and I spoke at half-time about being positive. Anything can happen here, I've seen it many times over the years. You just need something to go our way and the boys were fantastic second half.

"They kept going, didn't get disappointed and got exactly what they deserved in the end."

On if he sensed comeback after first goal: "This place does it. No matter what situation you're in, how tough it can seem, the supporters are desperate to get behind you and we gave them something to go on.

"We gave them other opportunities to score and it was close, and you're thinking 'that's another chance gone by' but we kept looking, kept pushing for answers and we found them in the end."

On chaotic few weeks and his position: "I don't have a crystal ball to know what happens next. We move on to the weekend, we've got a really important game here against Aston Villa, which we need to prepare for right."

  11. 'Huge lesson for Villa'published at 22:50 GMT

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live at Nou Camp

The word you'd use in this performance is naïve from Aston Villa. I think there were a lot of times what they did in forward areas were impressive. The final ball wasn't quite there tonight. You cannot try and play out from the back.

It was like a pack of wolves hunting the way Barcelona go after the ball and they're just waiting and as soon as that first pass is play, they're on it.

A little bit disappointing in the second half after being so positive in the first half but a huge lesson to learn here tonight against Barcelona as to what the level is.

  12. 'In this level you need to be more ruthless'published at 22:47 GMT

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports: "The result is not good, a lot of things positive but it was not enough to get a good result.

"How we are building the team is clear in 90 minutes but we have young players, talented players and experienced players. Today we conceded some mistakes. Over the process we've had here we have made those mistakes but then overcame them.

"Today more or less after the mistake we made we were creating chances, facing them with individual duels. If we could score one goal with the chances we had in the first half maybe it would have been different but we were not clinical.

"I can feel on one side we are comfortable doing our way because we have nine points because of the good work before. We should be realistic but at the same time feeling good how we are doing it.

"Of course I have my opinion how we can get better but the experience today was very important.

"This is the level we want to achieve again. Today was a good experience, bad result but good things as well. In this level you must be more ruthless."

  13. 'Man Utd need to continue giving fans something to cheer about'published at 22:45 GMT

Now for the fans it's about doing exactly what they did in the second half. Backing their team in the same way and when things go wrong, let's not get negative straight away. Put things into context sometimes because you are coming up against a very good Aston Villa side, so things can go wrong in games but it's about the reaction.

Most of all it's the players responsibility to give the fans something. Give them something to cheer about and they will respond. And they did that tonight.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It's unbelievable really, it's the magic of this stadium and this club, these fans, to come back from 2-0 down.

"As much as you'd don't expect it, you know it's possible at a place like this."

On what was said at half-time: "We needed a bit of a kick. We were a bit reactionary. When we lost the ball, we weren't reacting as quickly as we could have and the boss really drilled it into us that we need to be more active and take the game ourselves."

On second-half performance: "We know what we're capable of. We know we're a dangerous team and we know we can change a game whenever, it's just it all coming together at the right time. It has tonight and hopefully we carry it on for the rest of the season."

On feeling in the dressing room: "Everyone is buzzing. A big sig of relief, we've needed this win for a while and hopefully we can carry it on."

On the connection with the fans: "It's unlike anything else. We'd do anything for those fans on that pitch. All the love they give us throughout a season, it's only right we repay them - and a bit of fun jumping into the stands with them!"

  16. 'Media have no idea what's going on at Man Utd'published at 22:38 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Leicester goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

    On Bruno Fernandes' post-match comments:

I like that. In Bruno Fernandes' defence is that I've been in football a long time and what's reported in the media is a fraction of the truth usually. They have no idea what's going on in the dressing room. They have no idea what's going on in the training ground. The amount of times I saw something written about the clubs I was playing in that couldn't be further from the truth was absolutely staggering. As players we couldn't believe they could get away with writing things that were said.

I understand that there could be frustration if that's the case from Fernandes' side. He said what he said [after the Como match]. That wasn't behind closed doors. And the things he's saying now in terms of taking responsibility for his performances that weren't good enough, that's how the conversations should've gone when it started.

Manchester United have always had a way of communicating with the media but this isn't the Manchester United of old.

I hope for Manchester United and Michael Carrick they can draw a line under all this public stuff and they can get back to winning games like they did today.

  17. 'We don't need to save anyone's job'published at 22:36 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, on the players needing to perform: "It's about performing at this club, getting results and winning games It's been a long time, we didn't get a win, it's been frustrating for them as much as us too, but we didn't take that in wrong way because it's normal. Fans want to win games. They are used to seeing this club at the top, winning trophies and it's been frustrating to see the club in this situation.

"We are all frustrated with the situation and we want to get out of this and hopefully this win today gives us the start of something good for us."

On saving Michael Carrick's job: "We don't need to save anyone's job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together. It's been tough, there's been a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of lies around many things that have happened between me and the manager, that we have cleared the air, then after that the manager took decision to be on the bench because I'm not performing.

"Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions. It doesn't change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club. It doesn't change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me."

  18. Man Utd have a 'lot more to prove'published at 22:35 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

I think it's in there and you can see that in certain parts of the game. You can see that they can be aggressive and can get high on the press, they can do nice things on the ball and score goals but they can also give goals away which you saw in the first half.

They have to get a little bit of continuity in their game now and become a better team over the 90 minutes.

If they do that then they will be okay, but there is still a long way to go and a lot more to prove. Let's not get carried away, they played well for half a game, it was nice, but there is still a lot to do.

  19. 'It's been tough for the fans'published at 22:33 GMT

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to Amazon Prime: "It's tough to say something at the moment to be honest. It's been a tough period for us, we have not been able to play in the way we want, get the results we want. We've done some good bits, but not had the consistency to do it through a whole game to get results and it's been tough.

"But today was important to get a win. We knew after that we still had the fans with us, we felt we could change it with a goal and something and fortunately we did it today."

On his penalty miss and re-take: "First one didn't go the way I wanted, I did something wrong but I got a second chance and I cleared my head and my mind was only on to get the ball in back of the net.

"It's been tough for the fans, we understand that. Having that belief from their side helps the team a lot and today was one of those days that Old Trafford came alive."

  20. 'We defended well'published at 22:30 GMT

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa

    Barcelona

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, speaking to Uefa: "It was important at home against a really good team. We defended well, really happy with what I saw in the defence. Everyone gave their best to keep the clean sheet today.

"We have the right distance between us and we are very compact. In front of our goal we defended well. It was amazing."

On Rodri, who went off with an issue: "He has some discomfort in the muscle and we have to wait until tomorrow.
