  1. What another fascinating session that was, as England wrapped up New Zealand's innings in good time and then extended their lead healthily.

    It's also time for me to take a break, so Sam Drury is poised to take you through the lunch break and the afternoon session.

    Four more! A deliberate edge from Bethell flies for four as he adjusts his hands expertly to play the ball so late.

    But Will O'Rourke responds with another ripper that strikes him nastily on the glove, just giving him a little warning of what's still to come.

    England lost Duckett but have added a handy flurry of runs in the past few overs to take them to lunch in a very promising position.

    Ben Duckett was proactive today, attacking whenever the ball was full enough. He batted at a strike rate of 145 and hit three boundaries off deliveries pitched in the 3–6m length. However, the fullest delivery he faced in this match ultimately brought about his dismissal.

    Emilio Gay has got an uncomplicated style. Many have likened him to Sir Alastair Cook with his front foot press.

    The New Zealand seamer isn't able to find his usual metronomic rhythm. He does manage to draw the edge later in the over but it bursts through the slip cordon for four, and Daryl Mitchell gestures as if he is struggling to pick up the ball.

    A 92mph snorter from Will O'Rourke, whizzing past the nose of England's young number three.

    Ben Duckett just started to look dangerous. He was not fluent to start with but was finding his touch.

    Just before lunch, it's not a nice time for Jacob Bethell to come in.

    Ah, Ben Duckett throws away such a promising start.

    He'd pulled the previous ball from Will O'Rourke to the boundary, and perhaps gets a little carried away. He doesn't move his feet and tries to angle the ball to third man, but instead guides it straight into Glenn Phillips' hands at gully.

    An important strike for New Zealand just before lunch.

    That last boundary from Emilio Gay kind of reminded me of a trademark Alastair Cook backward cut, and his stance and approach does give off a bit of Cook I think (early days for comparison though, but he definitely looks a good player!)

    Emilio Gay also gets hold of one, driving straight down the ground, but Henry intercepts and restricts him to a single.

    Not the return he'd have wanted after watching the rest of the seamers cause havoc over the past day and a half.

    New Zealand do turn to Matt Henry but he's greeted by back-to-back boundaries from Ben Duckett!

    Oh, lovely.

    Emilio Gay is tested by Will O'Rourke, ducking under a bouncer before a play and a miss through to the keeper. But England's new opener responds in style with a fluent drive through the covers for four more.

    Positive from England with just over 15 minutes to go until lunch.

    Confidence-booster for Emilio Gay.

    You can sense New Zealand's frustration as Nathan Smith gifts him a short, wide ball to cut away for four.

    A shake of the head for Smith as he trudges away from his mark, slamming his cap against his leg in anger. Time to give Matt Henry a go?

    It's the sort of match when any runs you score count double. If you get 40 here it's the equivalent of getting 80 on a truer surface.

    Duckett is OK to continue, but he's really being tested by O'Rourke here.

    He edges one into his foot, fends another away from his ribs and then plays and misses outside the off stump.

    A brilliant, gripping over.

    It's not easy out there but a stand of 24 unbroken is substantial progress. It's a bit of a baptism for Emilio Gay. Neither of them have been middling the ball.

    Duckett hasn't been playing with his usual fluency, but who has in this match?

  19. That was an absolute ripper from O'Rourke.

    With the pace, bounce and skill of these New Zealand quicks on this pitch, that just shows how well these two have done to survive this new ball burst and add to England's lead pretty nicely.

    Ouch.

    Will O'Rourke's first ball is brutal, rearing up from a good length and slamming into Ben Duckett's glove. He immediately whips his hand off the bat and will require a bit of treatment on his index finger.
