It was a tough chance because it kept really low. It went to James Rew fast but he should have taken it.

It's been an impressive start for Josh Tongue but England are not going to strain to hard here, they do need wickets.

You have to wonder. If England bowled like this, with these fields, on the morning of day two, would NZ start the second innings with a 100-run lead? I am not sure they would.

    Daniel Smith, Sittingbourne

  5. NZ 46-2published at 14 overs

Henry Nicholls plays in a fairly measured fashion to Sonny Baker in the first over after drinks.

An important period for England here. A couple of wickets in the session and they will be right back in this game.

This England side, when things get ragged, they find it very hard to stop the raggedness. It unravels and it unravels for a long time.

  7. drinks break

New Zealand 44-2 at drinkspublished at 13 overs

Josh Tongue carefully places his fingers on the seam at the top of his mark, like a tailor carefully pinching some cloth.

He concedes his first run off his 16th delivery after Henry Nicholls manages to nudge one into the leg side for a single.

    Drinks.

Sonny Baker, after a hop, skip and a jump, bustles in.

Henry Nicholls fiddles with his glove straps before clipping one off his hip for a single to keep the over.

Incidentally, Baker's idiosyncratic run-up is a byproduct of bowling at nets indoors where he did not have much of a run-up to work with.

New Zealand have been much more secure so far this innings. They've played 20% false shots - at this point on day one, they were at 27%.

  10. NZ 38-2published at 11 overs

Henry Nicholls sees off a maiden from Josh Tongue which tightens things up after a fairly expensive over from Matthew Fisher.

Ben Stokes is back on for his second spell for Durham. Again, he's convinced he's got a wicket after an appeal for a catch down the leg side. He didn't even really turn around to the umpire.

England have got to be right on it here, they've given themselves an opportunity. Get another one or two here quickly.

  13. NZ 37-2published at 10 overs

A bouncer from Matthew Fisher but Rachin Ravindra picks up the length quickly and flashes a pull shot through mid-wicket for four.

James Rew trying what was so effective for New Zealand with the keeper standing up but this went right between his legs.

  15. NZ 33-2published at 9.3 overs

Joe Root looks a little agitated as he conveys some instructions to a fielder between deliveries of a Matthew Fisher over.

Not sure what has got Root's goat.

James Rew has a go at standing up to the stumps at the start of Fisher's over but sees the ball slip through his legs and four byes are conceded.

  16. NZ 28-2published at 9 overs

Josh Tongue targeting a fourth and fifth stump line to Rachin Ravindra.

He offers up a wider one with his final delivery but the Kiwi is unable to scythe beyond Jordan Cox at point.

Tongue is given a generous applause from The Oval crowd as he returns to his fielding position in the deep.

  17. NZ 28-2published at 8.3 overs

Josh Tongue pins Rachin Ravindra on the pads.

    Just above the knee roll.

England appeal vociferously, but emotions settle down and Joe Root decides to keep his powder drive with the review.

Josh Tongue's a fantastic bowler, he makes things happen. It was a loose shot, he lured Devon Conway into that expansive extra cover drive. Pretty good catch from Harry Brook, I've seen him drop a few in that second slip area.

It's another timely breakthrough for England. We need to be patient, disciplined but with fire.

That loosening up pays off immediately for Josh Tongue!

The England seamer lands a tempter in a fifth or sixth stump line and Devon Conway takes the bait.

Conway attempts to drive expansively but with a smidgen of nip he sends an edge flying to Harry Brook at second slip who pouches it in the bread basket.

Two on the board for England.

  20. NZ 28-1published at 8 overs

Matthew Fisher gets one to spit up at Devon Conway and the Kiwi opener, slightly startled, pulls a hand off the bat.

Fisher drops his final ball shot and Henry Nicholls pulls down to deep square where Jofra Archer dives to cut off the boundary.

The flags on top of the pavilion are fluttering in the breeze.

Josh Tongue starting to loosen up his limbs.
