Ben Stokes' first spell for Durham today is over. Six overs, two maidens, no wickets and 16 runs.

He had a big lbw shout off the last ball of the his sixth over turned down and slapped the floor in frustration after the umpire shook his head.

The umpire, incidentally, is former spinner James Tredwell, who played 20 times for England with Stokes.

  2. new ball

Unsurprisingly, New Zealand take the new ball straight away.

Matt Henry is returning to take it, he'll be looking to wrap up this partnership of 43.

These are very frustrating runs for New Zealand.

Nicely done by Matthew Fisher, swivelling on a short ball from Nathan Smith that didn't get up and sending it for four behind square.

Three balls later and he lashes Smith through the covers for another boundary, then takes a single to retain the strike.

That takes him to 40 from 65 deliveries.

  6. Eng 272-9published at 79 overs

Rachin Ravindra whirls through an over of left-arm spin, with Matthew Fisher taking his single from the fourth ball.

There's a hint of a chance there, edging past his stumps and Tom Blundell.

The new ball is due after the next over from Nathan Smith.

Ben Stokes is into his sixth over for Durham here at Chester-le-Street. He's bowling well, getting one in the previous over to lift nicely to beat the edge.

He's very, very quick Matt Fisher, he's got long legs, big strides. What he does do is he gets out of the blocks very quickly.

I think he's got a little niggle, he's feeling that left leg a bit.

It's an immediate change of ends for Nathan Smith as he replaces Will O'Rourke.

Matthew Fisher turns him round the corner and runs a swift two, then pulls the New Zealand seamer for four in a similar area.

This partnership is now worth 33.

This is Sonny Baker's third longest first class innings by minutes at the crease. His longest is an hour - that's in about 10 minutes' time.

  11. Eng 264-9published at 77 overs

Hey, 77 overs in and we get a fifth bowler for New Zealand.

Rachin Ravindra, who has 11 wickets in 22 Tests, comes on with his left-arm spin.

It's another one Fisher single over.

The love in for Ben Stokes disturbs me. He's has been an unbelievable talent, but is waning. The discussion should be who should replace him?

    Norman, Milford,

It looks like the suspension of Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson has only succeeded in punishing England cricket fans.

    Ian, Peterborough

People that think Ben Stokes not playing is the reason England are in this mess forget what a disaster he had as captain in the Ashes. And the fact he averages less than 20 with the bat in the last six Tests.

    John, London

One more single - Matthew Fisher's, unsurprisingly, off Will O'Rourke's latest.

We're four overs from the new ball.

Nice little shot, Sonny Baker just let it hit the bat.

The first runs in Test cricket for Sonny Baker!

They come from his 16th delivery, edging Nathan Smith past the cordon for four.

Re Graeme 11:56: I don’t like this they 'have to go now'. We are two-and-a-bit days into a Test that isn’t working after winning at Lord's. We don’t have our captain and strike bowler. It’s a young team not sure it’s Rob Key and Brendon McCullum's fault.

    Paddy, London

Unlike plenty messaging in, I recognise its an inexperienced side but the naivety shown yesterday morning and by some of our batsmen hasn't been a great. we need to somehow win all three sessions today.

    Rob, Fulham

Amazing that the comments are so negative, sack the management etc. Did England win the first Test? You are allowed to lose and it’s a long way from over yet. Get a grip people.

    Ooof.

Matthew Fisher loops Will O'Rourke for two on the leg side, and a few balls later the towering seamer slams a delivery into the batter's helmet.

There's a concussion test, which Fisher passes.

    BBC Sport journalist at Chester-le-Street

We've got a concussion test up here because Ben Stokes has thudded a bouncer into Luke Proctor's helmet.

At the very same moment in Glamorgan, Gus Atkinson also hit Asa Tribe with a bouncer. There's a concussion test there too.

It's an inexperienced bowling line up for England, that's what I'm slightly concerned about. We saw the wheels came off a bit bowling yesterday.

  20. drinks break

    Eng 256-7published at 73 overs

Double change again for New Zealand, as Nathan Smith replaces Matt Henry.

Just one single from the over as we head into drinks.

This partnership is now worth 18 - 17 of them are Matthew Fisher's, the other run a leg bye.

Sonny Baker is yet to score off 12 deliveries.
