BBC Four continues its major retrospective season of award-winning films by Tony Palmer with Callas – the definitive documentary portrait of American Greek-born opera singer Maria Callas.
This landmark documentary film, which Callas herself asked Tony Palmer to make, was first released in 1987, 10 years after her death, and contained new and shocking revelations about her life. The film exposes the betrayal of Callas by many people who were close to her, the destruction of her marriage and the fact that she died a lonely and virtually penniless woman.
The film shows a broken woman on stage, who sings nakedly from her heart about herself and her life to staggering effect.
Callas has won over 20 prizes since its original release and received worldwide critical acclaim.

However, the odd couple soon discover they have more in common than they first realised, with Spooner revealing he was a bit of a tearaway when he was Liam's age, and the youngster makes amends when he foils a con man's plan to scam the pensioner.
Meanwhile, back at the Dumping Ground, Gus gets advice from everyone for his big date with a girl from his orchestra, but it looks like it could end in embarrassment for the young love birds.
Richard Wisker plays Liam, Michael Jayston plays Spooner and Noah Marullo plays Gus.
