This event has now been held. To see photos and video from the day follow the links below: Help playing audio/video In the year that China hosts the Beijing Olympics, a series of events is being held in Newcastle and Gateshead to celebrate contemporary Asian culture. ![]() Head to Chinatown to join in Running across several months, EAST'08 will include elements of music, dance, art and technology from Japan, China and South Asia - and it all kicks off with the annual Chinese New Year celebrations in Newcastle's Chinatown on Sunday 10 February. Fun day outAlways a popular day out, this year should be no exception, with lots of things to see and do between 11am and 4pm to welcome in the Year of the Rat. Traditional Chinese entertainment will be provided by Ling Chinese Entertainments on the Bath Lane Stage, and include Chinese magic, Lion dancing, acrobatics and foot juggling! There will be displays of Chinese costumes and arts and crafts, the chance to try out some traditional Chinese games and of course plenty of tasty Chinese food to eat. As part of EAST'08 there will also be an exhibition of contemporary Chinese artwork, including animation and video, at various locations around Stowell Street. BBC BusBBC Radio Newcastle will be broadcasting live from the BBC Bus on Bath Lane on the day. Hop on board the bus to meet the team and pick up an event map.
