This series will be epic anyway, but to have this a year out from the World Cup just tees things up nicely for the tournament in Australia.

Obviously you can't discount the likes of France, England or Ireland (and others), but these two really are the sides to beat.

Player of the match Will Jordan on Sky Sports: "It meant everything. Ellis Park, what an arena. It was a serious shift and the boys dug deep. They got a taste of what it is like and I'm proud of our group, it's an awesome start to the series.

"Test footy is about absorbing pressure and turning yours into points. We withstood an Springbok onslaught, so we're stoked.

"I just love being out here. I'm so proud of our team for this effort."

A rather blunt South Africa captain Pieter-Steph du Toit on Sky Sports: "We made some mistakes and didn't make the most of our opportunities. We shot ourselves in the foot with errors and those make the difference.

"We have to go back to the drawing board and see where we can get better."

New Zealand captain Ardie Savea on Sky Sports: "We always knew the Springboks were coming and they have quality players. They can be hard to stop but I'm really proud of the effort. It was a boxing match and it came down to crucial moments. We got there in the end.

"It's always special coming to South Africa. To see the crowd and the fans, it's amazing to be here. Respect.

"We'll take this win but we know it's not over. We dug deep and we'll enjoy tonight, and come back on Monday and regroup."

This whole series has been marketed as the greatest rivalry in rugby, and it's not hard to see why.

The All Blacks are the All Blacks for a reason, and they were deserved winners.

One point down at half-time, New Zealand run away with it in the end.

That's set the tone nicely for the rest of the series.

We're into the final minute and South Africa have the ball on halfway.

Not often it's the officials drawing praise but you're keen to give Matthew Carley his due...

I have to agree. So often to be at the front of any criticism, Matthew Carley has been excellent today.

That sums up their last 20 minutes or so.

Just as they are going to build some momentum the ball is lost forward.

I don't think anyone predicted this as the final score.

They go for the line out but it's just about pride at this point.

Can the Boks finish on a high?

South Africa have the penalty advantage in the New Zealand 22 as we approach the final three minutes.

South Africa give away another penalty, this time for being off their feet.

They have absolutely imploded since they failed to score with about 20 minutes to go after piling the pressure on, and the All Blacks then extended their lead through Luke Jacobson.

So close for the All Blacks!

Will Jordan is nearly in and has to go for the offload, which is gathered by Libbok who is then bundled into touch.

The All Blacks have the line out, still in a dangerous position.

Oh dear, oh dear.

Cobus Reinach is offside and, for good measure, deliberately knocks the ball forwards off the back of the scrum. That's South Africa down to 13 for the rest of this game.

The wheels are falling off for the Boks.
