I think the Nations Championship is really good for the viewers because it's an actual competition now and it means maybe slightly more than a regular summer tour.

The viewers are going to be treated to full-strength teams going at it, whereas sometimes at the end of season, it just peters out and players get rested.

Based on what we saw today, we're going to be treated to a nice bit of rugby entertainment over the next few weeks.

    FT: Australia 31-33 Ireland

Next up, Ireland stay in Australia as they get ready to take on Japan next Saturday, who beat Italy earlier on.

After that, Andy Farrell's side made the short hop across to New Zealand to take on the All Blacks.

That one should be quite something.

We've had two games decided by two points, and we've had 23 tries in three matches.

There's legs in this Nations Championship, you know, and we're not done yet.

Wales, England and Scotland are all still to come, and you can follow those games on the BBC Sport app and website.

I think Ireland will learn what went wrong and build momentum this week.

You can see the spine and core of the team staying the same for next week against Japan, but maybe throwing a couple of new faces in there.

Gibson-Park has had a long season. Could you throw Craig Casey in there and give him a start?

  8. 'Plenty to do and plenty to work on'published at 13:34 BST 4 July

    FT: Australia 31-33 Ireland

Ireland boss Andy Farrell speaking after the win:

"That was some game, especially for the neutral!

"Some great tries and I thought Australia were awesome in the first half and we needed to come to the party a little bit more and I think we did that after the break.

"Wow, there were so big moment for us tonight. Hugo Keenan's tackle, he deserves something special when you are fighting like that and Sam Prendergast to have the calmness to convert that try.

"We got over the line in this match but there is plenty to do and plenty to work on."

Not only did Ireland get an unlikely win, but they also got their hands on a trophy as Dan Sheehan lifts the Lansdowne Cup in Sydney.

  10. 'We have to dust ourselves off'published at 13:32 BST 4 July

    FT: Australia 31-33 Ireland

Australia boss Joe Schmidt speaking after the narrow defeat:

"Probably just discipline at the end of the day let them have access into our 22.

"You can't do that to the number three team in the world and the team who probably have the best conversion rate in the 22.

"Right now, we will reflect on some of the missed opportunities, but we have to dust ourselves off and go again next week."

If that's the last time Joe Schmidt takes on Ireland, then what a game to go out on.

Schmidt, who had a trophy-laded spell with Ireland before he handed the keys to Andy Farrell after the 2019 World Cup, will leave Australia later this summer and hand over to Les Kiss.

Who knows what the future holds?

Fair play to Ben Donaldson for stepping up. Sometimes those kicks go over and you're the hero but it's a double-edged sword really.

Fair play Australia. Pietsch was excellent. Great, tense and attacking rugby all round. Absolutely mental last five minutes.

    Conor, Belfast

Australia did nothing in the second half other than give away penalties and kick Ireland the ball.

    Eoin, Lurgan

Ireland played way below what we can do but still won. Australia can feel hard done by.

  17. 'Ireland never gave up'published at 13:17 BST 4 July

    FT: Australia 31-33 Ireland

Player of the Match Hugo Keenan speaking on ITV Sport:

"It was so tight and so intense, a proper Test match.

"We [were] asked to make the thousands in green proud and I think that is exactly what we did. We never gave up and dug in deep.

"It came down to a kick so hard luck to Australia, they were really unlucky and it could have gone either way

"Australia have some incredible ball carriers and unbelievable threats at the breakdown. They are a top quality side."

We called it at half-time and whatever was said in the changing room worked! The group haven't been together long but they wouldn't use that as excuse.

That's been a proper, proper test match and Ireland have come out on top after some serious pressure.
