  1. Schauffele surging to the toppublished at 14:39 BST

    Schauffele -3, Koepka E, Hatton E (4*)

Xander Schauffele rolls in a seven-footer for his third birdie in the first four holes. He's one back of Stephan Jaeger and looking back to his best.

Brooks Koepka, however, passes up a golden chance to back up that birdie on the 12th with another after a lovely approach. He has struggled on the greens this season.

It's a bogey five for Tyrrell Hatton, though, and he drops back to level par. Don't put a microphone anywhere near him...

  2. Your Views: Dark horse to win it?published at 14:39 BST

Scheffler is the definite favourite - he simply doesn't have a weakness of note - but I'm eyeing Chris Gotterup as a potential contender. His statistical profile - bomber with very good putting, best approaches are from full wedge range - looks exactly right for this layout.

  3. Another bogey for Brysonpublished at 14:35 BST

    DeChambeau +2, Aberg E, Fowler E (4*)

    Bryson DeChambeauImage source, Getty Images

Criminal from Bryson DeChambeau as he takes an iron off the 13th tee for position and just plonks it in the rough just 211 yards away.

From there he hacks out of the rough and over the back of the green and takes three to get down so it's another bogey for DeChambeau - and more worringly there's no facet of his game that looks in good order early on.

Ludvig Aberg is also wayward off the tee here but he plays a nice recovery to the heart of the green and rolls in a beauty from 16 feet for a fine birdie.

  4. Postpublished at 14:30 BST

    McIlroy E, Spieth E, Rahm +1 (3*)

Despite a monstrous 352-yard drive, Rory McIlroy comes up shy with his second and his ball trickles back down the slope. His birdie putt is carrying serious speed, too, but he carefully dribbles one back down the hill and into the hole for a par.

Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm fail with their birdie tries, too, so it's as you were.

  5. Birdie for Brookspublished at 14:25 BST

    Schauffele -2, Koepka E, Hatton -1 (3*)

Solid course management from Xander Schauffele to leave his second to the 12th on the right level of the green, but he can't make this one.

It's another par for Tyrrell Hatton but Brooks Koepka makes a superb three after missing the fairway to the right and playing a tremendous approach to 14 feet.

  6. Great shot by Abergpublished at 14:21 BST

    DeChambeau +1, Aberg +1, Fowler +1 (3*)

Brilliant shot out of the rough by Ludvig Aberg on the 12th helps the Swede to salvage a par after a poor approach.

Bryson DeChambeau has a chance for a bounce back birdie but he misses the target as his scrappy start continues.

  7. Fine front nine for Fitzpatrickpublished at 14:18 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1 (9)

Alex Fitzpatrick is almost on the wrong hole up the ninth after a wild tee shot, but his recovery is excellent and he makes a par five to close out a fine first ever nine holes in the US PGA Championship.

He has two birdies and just one bogey as he continues to show that the biggest events in golf just don't faze him despite so much coming so quickly for him this year.

  8. Jaeger-bombpublished at 14:14 BST

    Jaeger -4 (6)

Golf can be such a simple game. Drive into the fairway, wedge your second to 15 feet and hole the birdie putt. That's three on the spin for Germany's Stephan Jaeger as he moves two clear of the field.

  9. McIlroy bounces backpublished at 14:12 BST

    McIlroy E, Rahm +1, Spieth E (2*)

Rory McIlroy hammers his drive down the 11th and controls the spin beautifully with his second, leaving himself an uphill five-footer for a bounce-back birdie. Makes it! Back to level par.

Pars for Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth, the latter passing up a great chance for a three.

  10. Bogey for Brysonpublished at 14:08 BST

    DeChambeau +1, Aberg +1, Fowler +1 (2*)

    Bryson DeChambeauImage source, Getty Images

Bryson DeChambeau was 30 feet away after two shots on the 11th, after three shots he was 50 feet away!

Needless to say he couldn't drain that one to save par so he drops a shot there wnd walks off fuming after being undone by that sloping green.

It's a tough one, but players know what they're dealing with so the mistake was going long from 120 yards out in the middle of the fairway.

  11. Schauffele picks up anotherpublished at 14:04 BST

    Schauffele -2, Koepka +1, Hatton -1 (2*)

Wedge in hand, Xander Schauffele judges the slope at the back of the 11th green to perfection and duly rolls in his putt to start with two straight birdies. He's looking good early doors.

It's a nice three for Tyrrell Hatton, too, but Brooks Koepka's birdie try slips past.

  13. Untidy starts for McIlroy and Rahmpublished at 13:58 BST

    McIlroy +1, Rahm +1, Spieth E (1*)

Inauspicious start for Rory McIlroy. Like most of the holes at Aronimink, the 10th offers a remarkably generous fairway, but the Masters champ manages to miss it on the right.

He draws an awful lie in the thick stuff and can only hack his ball - mid-handicapper style - about 100 yards down the fairway.

He has 70 yards for his third and leaves it around 12 feet beyond the cup, but misses the putt left. An opening bogey.

Jon Rahm was able to drop his ball on to the fairway, away from a sprinkler head, but he blocks his second out right and makes a mess of the third, misjudging the slope and watching his ball come back towards his feet. He gets up and down from there for a bogey.

Jordan Spieth is usually one of the most adventurous players out there, but he taps in for an uneventful two-putt par.

  14. Dastardly greenspublished at 13:58 BST

    DeChambeau E, Aberg +1, Fowler E (1*)

The 11th green looks one of the most fearsome at Aronimink as it's almost a like a cliff face that slopes from back to front.

Bryson DeChambeau has just found this out as he barely nudges the ball from just off the back of the green and sees it tumble way down miles past the hole and almost off the putting surface altogether!

It's a bit like putting down from the top of a marble staircase and trying to stop the ball on the second-last step. In short, no chance!

  15. Early leaderpublished at 13:57 BST

    Jaeger -3 (5)

While some of the more fancied names are having slightly pedestrian starts to the tournament, Germany's Stephan Jaeger is wondering what all the fuss is about.

He's just rolled in from 15 or so feet on the fifth for a third birdie of the day and that lifts him top of the leaderboard.

  17. Brennan & Hall in frontpublished at 13:49 BST

    Brennan -2 (5), Hall -2 (7)

American Michael Brennan has been jnoined by Cornwall's Harry Hall in the early lead of the 108th US PGA Championship.

Both men are on two under after Brennan put together birdies at the third and fourth while Hall picked up shots on the fifth and sixth as they both started on the first hole today.

Conditions are pretty soft and look pretty benign but two under is so far the best of the field.

  18. Opening birdie for Schauffelepublished at 13:47 BST

    Schauffele -1, Koepka +1, Hatton E (1*)

Xander Schauffele, who boasts 16 consecutive top-30 finishes in majors coming into this week, rolls in a lovely 15-foot birdie putt at the first.

He immediately moves in the right direction, but it's an ugly bogey for Brooks Koepka after missing the green to the right.

Par for Tyrrell Hatton, whose birdie try just dies off to the right.

  19. Putting practice neededpublished at 13:43 BST

    DeChambeau E, Aberg +1, Fowler E (1*)

Ludvig Aberg and Bryson DeChambeau could maybe do with a word with Phil Kenyon as both are pretty scruffy on their opening green, which is the 10th today.

Bryson leaves his lag putt well short for birdie, but manages to just get his par saver to drop in the side door.

Aberg though leaves himself even more work to do for par and he misses the target completely to drop a shot first up.

  20. McIlroy headlines marquee grouppublished at 13:41 BST

Jordan Spieth could follow in Rory McIlroy's footsteps this week

How about this for a group?

Career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy is playing with two of the guys who could join him in that illustrious group this year.

Jordan Spieth will become the seventh man to conquer all four majors if he gets over the line, while victory this week would give Jon Rahm the opportunity to complete the set at the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July.

As it stands, McIlroy (six), Spieth (three) and Rahm (two) have 11 majors between them.

This should be a great three-ball to follow.
