So JJ Spaun becomes the second American to win the BMW PGA Championship in three years on a day when Manuel Elvira's late lapse cost him dearly and Rory McIlroy threatened a late charge.

BMW PGA Championship JJ Spaun on his love of UK: "The last three years we have been taken holidays here and we love the UK culture and the pubs and cosiness. We come from Arizona where it can still be 90 degrees fahrenheit, which is warm for Christmas and my wife doesn't like not feeling in the Christmas spirit.

"It is fortunate for us to be comfortable and love this part of this world. Any chance we get, we come here and that is why I am here this week."

The presentation party are out, which means it's trophy time for JJ Spaun.

More from JJ Spaun speaking after winning the title: "I played with a huge chip on my shoulder. I definitely had something to prove this week.

"I'm so delighted to be here and just to even play this event. I've always wanted to play for the longest of time. The extra motivation, I think that is the willpower that you kind of have.

"Being left off the Presidents Cup team a couple weeks ago was very disappointing, and you know, I wanted to prove that I deserve to be on that team. I took care of my business this week. So all the best to the team next week at Medinah and I'll be watching."

Asked about why his wife was walking around with a mask of Jeremy Clarkson, Spaun added: "We've grown fond of him, along with the English culture, we actually take holidays in December in the Cotswolds, and we really enjoy his show.

"I went to his pub, with the hopes of catching a glimpse of him but he wasn't around. Yeah, she said we would have a surprise guest following this week if I competed in the tournament and sure enough it was Friday morning, Thursday morning, I see the face of Jeremy Clarkson and her holding it. Jeremy was there in spirit and I think he brought me good fortune."

One consolation for Rory McIlroy is that he will make a huge dent in Patrick Reed's lead in the Race to Dubai standings today. The Northern Irishman is going for a record-equalling eighth title.

"I'm excited. I have three events until the end of my DP World Tour season. I'm not sure what Patrick's schedule looks like coming up, but I feel like I have enough opportunities," McIlroy said.

"And I'm going back to-golf course in India that I played for the first time last year, so I'll know it a little bit better; and then going to Abu Dhabi and Dubai where I had a lot of success in my career. Excited for the opportunity, and it would be obviously amazing to match Monty's record."

Pete in Oxfordshire: Brutal for the Spaniard, but he can be proud of his week overall. He knows now that he can mix it at the top, so he should wipe his mouth and double down. There'll be other tournaments.

You have to feel for Manuel Elvira, who seemingly had everything in his hands coming down the 18th and he's been speaking about how it all went wrong for him:

"Devastating that I hit the wrong shot at the right time on the lay up and left myself the toughest shot in the fairway bunker, and wasn't able to pull it off.

"I've played some of the best golf probably of my life. I was in contention and I wasn't really that nervous.

"Maybe coming on the 72nd hole but I managed to hit a good tee shot and unfortunately hit a bad second shot. It's been a great week and I'm really glad for it."

"It means so much - I've kind of blossomed into this player I never thought I could be.

"To take my game across the world - more specifically here in England, a place that's dear to my family's heart - the stars kind of aligned for me to come out on top.

JJ Spaun and his wife are celebrating with what looks to be a call back home to his daughters.

This is his first ever victory outside the United States and it was very much a tale of elation and anguish.

It is not to be for Manuel Elvira, who gets down to around three feet. His conservative second shot has cost him the first win of his professional career.
