  1. Solid start for Smalleypublished at 14:37 BST

    Smalley -3 (2*)

Alex Smalley is still grinding away with a share of the lead, knocking out two pars on 10 and 11 for a nice calm start to the day.

There's a lot of unheralded PGA Tour players in the mix near the top of the leaderboard and it'll be abig test of nerve to see how they get on today.

  2. Good par savepublished at 14:35 BST

    Reed -3 (5)

Good par save on five from Patrick Reed, he knows full well he's got a clean card for the entire tournament and he does not want to let that run end.

He's a bit wild off the sixth tee though...

  3. Bogey for Morikawapublished at 14:34 BST

    Lowry -1, Hovland +5, Morikawa E (4*)

It's only a short par-four the 13th, but you still need to find the fairway off the tee, as Collin Morikawa found out when making a bogey following a visit to the rough from his drive.

Shane Lowry did find the fairway and would have wanted to stick it closer than 20 feet when just 99 yards away, but that's all he could manage and he failed to get that birdie chance to drop.

  4. Another shot goes for Thomaspublished at 14:31 BST

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas +1 (3*)

Deathly silence around the 12th green as Justin Thomas slides a seven-foot par putt past the cup for his second straight bogey.

He's suddenly four shots back from the lead.

Cameron Young and Keegan Bradley are safely in for par.

  5. Three parspublished at 14:29 BST

    Scheffler -2, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +2 (2*)

After the horror show that was the 10th, all three play the 11th a lot better as they all make par with all three having birdie chances.

Scottie Scheffler only has that after a remarkable recovery from the right bunker as he's off target with his drive again - he missed left with his first and now right with h is second.

  6. Early birdie for Blanchetpublished at 14:26 BST

    Blanchet -2 (1*)

Chandler Blanchet is an unfamiliar name near the top of the leaderboard after an early birdie.

The 30-year-old American is playing in his first US PGA Championship having bagged a PGA Tour card for the first time this year when finishing second on the Korn Ferry Tour.

And he's making the most of his tournament debut so far.

  7. Pars apiece for Fleetwood Mac grouppublished at 14:21 BST

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +1, Fleetwood +2 (3*)

Three straight pars to start for Tommy Fleetwood as he turns off the 12th green. He's currently bang on that +2 line.

Partners Chris Gotterup and Bob MacIntyre also collect fours and move onto the reachable par-four 13th.

  8. Where will the cut line be?published at 14:18 BST

The PGA of America's guidelines say the 156-strong will be cut to the top 70 and ties at the end of today.

As things stand, that would be 85 players at +2 or better.

Long way to go yet but we'll keep an eye on it for you.

  9. Reed joins the leadpublished at 14:16 BST

    Reed -3 (4)

Lovely birdie from Patrick Reed at the fourth sees him join the leaders at three under.

It's the approach shot that does the damage here as Reed fires a laser in from 160 yards out down to just five feet - and he's not missing that chance for a first birdie of the day.

A reminder Reed still hasn't made a single bogey yet in the tournament.

RE 13:45. This is anyone's competition to come runner-up to Scottie Scheffler in.

    Chris, Brookline Country Club

You could be right. A bit of a scratchy start from the world number one so far though.

  11. Bogey start for Scheffler - double for Rosepublished at 14:14 BST

    Scheffler -2, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +2 (1*)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

Bogey start for Scottie Scheffler as we saw yesterday there's not much joy when you miss a fairway - as the world number one had to hack it out of the left rough and still had 44 yards to the green.

Matt Fitzpatrick also makes bogey after being even further left off the tee, while Justin Rose has a nightmare double-bogey start after some big bunker trouble off the tee.

That's a pretty poor return for this star group.

  12. Bogey for Thomaspublished at 14:09 BST

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas E (2*)

We mentioned earlier the 11th hole had a hideous-looking pin tucked on the right of the green and boy is Justin Thomas discovering that the hard way.

Unfortunate to miss the two-tiered putting surface and land in a bunker, he splashes out onto the top next to the flag only for it to roll back down the ridge.

Another chip later and he's got a putt to limit the damage to a bogey, which he holes.

  13. Kaymer plummettingpublished at 14:07 BST

    Kaymer +1 (6)

One of yesterday's feel-good stories was overnight co-leader Martin Kaymer but in the tricky conditions today he is going backwards, fast.

Four bogeys in his past five holes sees him toppling away from contention.

  14. Fine birdie putt for Gotteruppublished at 13:58 BST

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +2 (2*)

That's a tasty putt from Chris Gotterup as he downs a birdie at the 11th from 27 feet. He's back up to one over par.

Pars apiece for Tommy Fleetwood and Bob MacIntyre.

  15. Hovland hole out!published at 13:55 BST

    Lowry -1, Hovland +4, Morikawa -1 (2*)

Viktor Hovland chips out of the roughImage source, Getty Images

Well, well, well, Viktor Hovland needed something from somewhere, you wouldn't think it'd be with his short game though!

Stuck in the deep bunker on 11 the Norwegian flicked the ball out smartly and watched on as came fizzing out with plenty of action on, took a coule of spinny bounces and darted into the hole.

A much-needed birdie and even more needed spark.

  16. Postpublished at 13:51 BST

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas -1 (1*)

Good touch from Cameron Young on the green ensures he escapes his first hole unscathed with a two-putt par.

It's the same result for his US playing partners Justin Thomas and Keegan Bradley.

  17. Records tumblingpublished at 13:45 BST

Table showing how the US PGA has a very congested leaderboard - within two shots 33, within three 48, within four shots 66, within five shots 92

The bunched nature of the tournament after round one is summed up by this table.

So many people are within striking distance of the leaders - in fact, it's a record for major championships for those within two, three and five shots.

In short, it's anyone's competition to win. Although Scottie Scheffler is leading...

  18. Kaymer going backwardspublished at 13:44 BST

    Kaymer -1 (4)

Another bogey for Martin Kaymer puts him two over for the round - that's two bogeys in his first four holes and could be a bad omen.

The last time Kaymer was among the top 10 at the end of a major championship round was at the 2020 PGA Championship, where he was T3 after the first round but ended up missing the cut.

  19. Postpublished at 13:43 BST

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas -1 (13:29 BST)

Cameron Young is miles down the 10th fairway (his first) and lining up 126 yards into the pin.

Should be meat and potatoes for a man of his quality but he's not judged that correctly and as his second shot lands on the green, it's 30 feet from the hole and rolls even further back.

A swish of the club as the 2026 Players champ stalks after his ball.

  20. Three-putt bogey for Lowrypublished at 13:41 BST

    Lowry -1, Hovland +5, Morikawa -1 (1*)

    Shane LowryImage source, Getty Images

Doh! Shane Lowry makes an opening bogey after a glorious tee shot, and it's in the most annoying way possible as he hits the green in regulation then three-putts for a four. The big man will be fuming!

Viktor Hovland also makes a bogey as he pays the price for that wayward tee shot.
