Open debutant Jackson Suber was the surprise overnight leader after round one of the 154th Open.

A superb finish to his round, including a rare eagle on the 17th, helped him to a score of five under par.

Suber, 26, told BBC Radio 5 Live after his first-round 65 that he had not been to Europe until the past few days and his lifetime experience of links golf was the 27 holes he played earlier this week.

It's been a long time since we've had a Tiger on the loose at The Open, but Germany's Tiger Christensen has came flying out of the traps this morning with birdies on his opening two holes.

Before we get too excited though he's still three over as he shot 75 yesterday...

We have play out on the course early doors. England's Matt Wallace birdied the first - and is wearing a striking purple outfit today - we'll get you a picture as soon as my eyes have recovered.

Compatriot Laurie Canter just missed his birdie chance on the opener, while Harrogate's John Parry has three straight pars after starting off the day in the opening group.

And 2022 Open champion Cameron Smith has just teed off at the first - finding the right rough. It's not that cold at Royal BIrkdale this morning as the Australian is only in short sleeves.

For the first time since Monday, there’s actually a nip in the air first thing. People of a southern persuasion like me could be tempted to add a layer on the top half.

It’s definitely breezier than yesterday morning, so any of those earlier starters hoping for benign conditions may not be too chuffed.

Local hero Tommy Fleetwood had a huge crowd following him around Royal Birkdale on Thursday, and enjoyed feeling the love from the Southport faitfhul even though he didn't have his best golf with him.

He still shot under par though which considering all the emotion around the occasion was a decent result - he was off to the range to work on his irons after the round to prepare for a better effort today.

How does it feel to lead the Open Championship on your debut? Jackson Suber explains.

"Just too many stupid mistakes," was how Rory McIlroy summed up his first round. "But every time I made a stupid mistake, thankfully I made a birdie to sort of keep myself in it."

The Northern Irishman is seven shots off surprise leader Jackson Suber after making plenty of mistakes on the greens, but felt the greens were "inconsistent" for the afternoon wave of players at Royal Birkdale.

"Just because some parts of the greens are still alive and growing and other parts are really dead."

McIlroy is out in the early wave today, hoping the the "greens are a little bit smoother in the morning" so he'll hope to make a move up the leaderboard.

If you were a player out early on day one, you got the best of the conditions.

The wind picked up a little bit as the day progressed and scoring was a touch harder for the later starters.
