  1. Par save for Koepkapublished at 18:35 BST

    Koepka +1, Young +1, Gotterup +5 (13)

The 13th is a brilliant hole - just 367 yards for a par four but it's the fifth hardest on the course today thanks to a clever tee box that means you're hitting down across the fairway at an angle.

Brooks Koepka falls for the trap as he runs out of fairway and into the rough, and from there can only hack it out into the bunker. But he manages to rescue his par with a nine foot saver.

  2. Another Burns bogeypublished at 18:34 BST

    Burns E, Hatton +1, SW Kim +8 (13*)

"Oh, come on!" sighs Sam Burns as his putt scoots by the hole.

It was from 18 foot so it was a long shot - but it was also for par and the miss ensures he'll drop another shot away from the leaders.

  3. McIlroy moves within onepublished at 18:30 BST

    McIlroy -1, Fleetwood +2, Aberg -2 (12*)

That's how to do it when your putter isn't behaving. After watching birdie putts stay above ground on the previous two holes, Rory McIlroy crunches a glorious wedge into the third green, spinning it back to three feet for his third birdie of the round.

Ludvig Aberg also sent a pin-seeker into the green but his birdie try - to become the first player to reach three under - trickles off to the right.

More frustration for Tommy Fleetwood, though. Another short par putt misses and he slips back to two over.

  4. Stevens moves level with leader Abergpublished at 18:29 BST

    Stevens -2 (14*)

Sam Stevens is not going anywhere.

The American, ranked 54th in the world, has moved level with leader Ludvig Aberg.

He holes a 40-foot putt for his third birdie in five holes.

  5. Scheffler scramblingpublished at 18:29 BST

    Scheffler +3, Spaun +3, Howell +3 (9)

Scottie Scheffler makes a nice par on the ninth from a tricky spot in the rough wide of the green - and that's surprisingly his first up and down of the round, having gone 0-3 on scrambling before then.

That'll be a key metric this week with some dramatic run-off areas around these greens, so Scheffler will have to improve on that going forward. Mind you, we're well used to the world number one making slow starts in tournaments.

Something tells me this one will be harder to make a big comeback on though.

  6. Postpublished at 18:28 BST

    Fowler E (11)

A necessary update on Rickie Fowler's attire. I hadn't actually clocked his shoes!

What do we make of these??

Not sure he's getting away with these at Augusta.

  7. Chance missedpublished at 18:24 BST

    Koepka +1, Young +1, Gotterup +5 (12)

A great chance for a Brooks Koepka birdie missed by the American as he slides a 10 footer beyond the hole - a little too far beyond the hole for comfort actually as it leaves a bit of a stinky one coming back. But in it goes for par.

Theres nothing entertaining about watching the best really struggle.

  9. Double bogey for Reedpublished at 18:21 BST

    Reed +1 (10)

    Disaster for Patrick Reed!

After a composed front nine, he makes a mess of the 10th and walks away with a double bogey.

He then pulls his tee shot on the 11th.

    Unravelling a little here....

  10. McIlroy misses anotherpublished at 18:16 BST

    McIlroy E, Fleetwood +1, Aberg -2 (11*)

Rory McIlroy hits a delightful shot into the 251-yard par-three second, but he's tentative with his 22-footer and misses out on what would have been a glorious two.

The putts aren't dropping for the six-time major winner.

Ludvig Aberg visited the greenside bunker but splashes out and rolls in another confident-looking putt to stay out in front on his own, while Tommy Fleetwood follows him in for a three.

  11. Fowler closes gappublished at 18:15 BST

There really isn't much colour out there on the course yet, bar Brooks Koepka's pink stripes, but we've found another all-white to go with JJ Spaun from earlier.

Rickie Fowler, who will no doubt be wearing his statement orange on Sunday and has just closed within two thanks to a birdie at 11, is also decked in white.

When I asked you if you could pull of this style, most of you said absolutely not.

    Works for Rickie though...right?

  12. Reed out in 34published at 18:13 BST

    Reed -1 (9)

    American Patrick Reed shoots a front-nine 34.

A couple of birdies on the back nine could help him take control.

  13. Birdie for Hattonpublished at 18:13 BST

    Burns -1, Hatton +1, SW Kim +6 (12*)

That'll feel good for Tyrrell Hatton as he drains a 21-foot birdie to inch back to one over par.

He's been grinding today and if it wasn't for that nightmare hole at 18, he'd be right up there.

  14. Double bogey for Schefflerpublished at 18:12 BST

Uh oh, even the world number one is struggling to win the battle with Shinnecock Hills here, as Scottie Scheffler makes a double bogey on the eighth to drop back to three over for the tournament.

That's the same as playing partners JJ Spaun, the defending champion, and US Amateur champion Mason Howell.

Need a wind check at Shinnecock?

You could study the flags scattered across the property.

Or you could just look at Tommy Fleetwood's 90s-inspired trousers.

The wide-leg cut trousers have been fluttering magnificently all afternoon, providing a real-time visualisation of the 35mph gusts sweeping across Long Island.

I love it when the golf is tough. You can see the players smashing up normal courses every week. The majors should be a step up

    Daniel, Portugal

Totally agree with Paul, Finchingfield (17:30 BST). Great to see the professionals challenged on a difficult course. Much more entertaining to watch challenging links like golf, than the common US target golf and birdie fests

  17. Aberg moves back in frontpublished at 17:58 BST

    McIlroy E, Fleetwood +1, Aberg -2 (10*)

    Ludvig AbergImage source, Getty Images

Oh yes! Ludvig Aberg rolls in his second 30-footer of the day to move back to two under and into the lead on his own. Not a bad way to start his back nine.

Rory McIlroy, from slightly closer, races one past the right edge but makes the return putt for par.

But it's a poor bogey from Tommy Fleetwood, who three putts from 25 feet and slips back to one over.

  18. Low-key Stevens & James keeping pacepublished at 17:58 BST

    Stevens -1 (13*), James -1 (8*)

Americans Sam Stevens and Ben James may not be well known, but they are both one under.

Stevens is world number 54, while James is playing in his first US Open as a professional after completing an All-American career at the University of Virginia.

Can either of them stay near the top of the leaderboard?

  19. Par for Burnspublished at 17:56 BST

    Burns -1, Hatton +2, SW Kim +6 (11*)

Sam Burns is a little short of the green with his tee shot at the second so needs two putts to secure his par.

It's a three for playing partner Tyrrell Hatton too.

  20. Oh Brooks!published at 17:54 BST

    Koepka +1, Young +2, Gotterup +4 (10)

You go on and on all day about how much a guy's putting has improved, and then Brooks Koepka goes and ruins it by missing a tiddler from four feet to make bogey.

He never looked comfortable stood over it, never looked happy making the stroke and the ball never got close to the hole really. Apart from that....
